It was apparently a bot that attacked anything within a certain block distance from you (though apparently he was there atm as his mother has stated he hasn't been home to be online)
Well, he wasn't really spamming left click. Like fiver said, it was a bot that he had that is totally against the rules. He was a nice guy, but I think he knew better.
It's called a 'Killaura' hack. As fiver said, it detects when someone gets close to you and automatically aims and attacks at the fastest "legal" attack speed so that it can't be detected by no-cheat. Hacks aren't allowed to be used on our server, therefore he was banned.
Whether he was sitting at his computer or not doesn't matter. He has it installed and in use or else it wouldn't have been running at spawn while he was afk. The 'I was afk' defense works here about as well as the 'it was my friend on my account' defense does.
So, since he was breaking the 5th rule listed in the wiki, which just happens to be one of the rules that warrant an instant permanent ban, that's what happened. As I said in my reply on the appeal, it's up to an Admin as to whether he's allowed to play here again.
