    Hi server people,

Yes, I'm still around! I've thought of this idea many times in the past and will make this explanation short:

We need to spice up the main towny world. It is the heart of our server and hasn't be tuned in a long time. There's only so much excitement that comes from planting saplings and building medieval castles.

I propose the following, in 3 simple steps:

    1. Turn PvP on in the main world (except spawn castle area).
    2. When towns claim plots, make them automatically PvP-SAFE chunks.
    3. Allow towns to opt into war ('/town enable war'). If towns are enabled for war, their claimed plots become PvP-enabled. Only Senior Assistants+ can opt into war.

That's it, it's not complicated. Folks that want nothing to do with PvP don't have to opt into war. This keeps the towny aspect untouched, but also spices things up for players looking to turn their existing towns into battle forts.

    _______________________________________________________

UPDATE! Based on the conversation below, this will be the revised idea (will continue to revise as needed):

    1. Turn PvP on in the main world (except spawn castle area). -- Configuration change
    2. When towns claim plots, they stay as PvP-ENABLED chunks. -- No development required
    3. Allow purchase of TNT. It would cost a LOT of Dei (3k DEI) for each piece because these would: -- No development required
    • Destroy town-protected land they fall on (they still can't be placed on a claim plot though) -- Configuration change (allow explosions)
    • Unclaim bombed town chunks automatically (this allows enemies to enter through a once protected/access-restricted barrier) -- Code change
    • Note: Placement of TNT will not be allowed, meaning it can only be dispensed. We may restrict dispenser placement to high-ranking craftsmen (for a fee) -- Configuration change (allow dispensers)
    4. Erase everyone's Dei. -- No development required
    5. Nice to have: Disable teleportation/disconnect commands in combat. -- Configuration change/plugin install

This would forever change main world, making town border protection and resident loyalty an ongoing critical process.

The only development required is the town plot unclaiming concept, and I'm open to other ways we could allow it other than TNT.

Town Unclaiming Exemptions (we may enact these rules)
    :
    • Towns with 5 or less residents
    • The last remaining town claimed plot

I suppose that entails plots already set to PvP being converted to the new "war plots" then.

Love the idea. We could even let individual players opt in/out of pvp. Maybe have a 1 hour delay to switch between the two.

It would be cool if we could play on the pre reset maps too. Pvp in old Doha would be a blast. Like Deity Games from back in the day.

Best you can hope for is world PvP, from a development resource allocation standpoint. Already have an option to enable PvP in a town, and it's off in the vast majority of towns. Your /town enable war idea seems very romanticized if you intend for towns to declare war against each other (think about it - it will just be spawn killing and cheap tactics). If you simply intend for the town to enable PvP - already a thing, again.

    I get your point, but:

    1. The development effort in my proposal is still on the lower effort end
    2. Towns will still be able to set their spawns private, reducing spawn killings (PvPers will have to get crafty)
    3. Having the whole world PvP is way different than finding a few PvP-enabled chuncks people can run on/off of

We should disable teleportation/disconnect commands in combat, if possible. That's got to be available in some plugin already.
Also, we should charge a big fee when towns disable war, so they won't do it in middle of PvP fights.

I don't think PvP is going to spice up or even work in the main server at all.

In PvP Main, you will have your PvE guys who will not join the wars and will also want their own fun to be protected. Either they would be forced to live in a 100% PvE town, or the whole concept would fail.

More importantly, DeityWar worked because its limitations forced people to clash:
Building and material gathering are only going to distract people from the PvP and make the game uneven.
Large maps, dozens of factions and 24/7 PvP make clashes unlikely and are the reasons why full-on wars never happened on Factions and won't happen in PvP Main. Under those conditions, spawn camping wasn't cheap. It was necessary. It turned out to be the easiest way players found to meet others and fight in Factions.

What is gonna happen is that a few people will create a camping point, where the majority of PvP will happen; some could town hop trying to kill unaware people, actually finding someone once in a hundred times; and, my favorite, it would get to the point where people would be so bored that they would betray their faction/town just to see something happen, just like in Factions.

We sure need something big to get any attention to the server, not from new players, but from the people who used to play here and still lurk, hoping to find that by some miracle, things are interesting again, but that thing is not a PvP-enabled map.

After years of vote-farming, I'm sure there are people here with money to make a PvP town and try out the formula. No need to complicate it. Why not just turn an entire town into an arena and see what happens?

Lots of good points. My intention is to adapt Kingdoms to make it more unique than just towny.

Why not something a little more forced onto players like this then:

    1. Turn PvP on in the main world (except spawn castle area). -- Configuration change
    2. When towns claim plots, they stay as PvP-ENABLED chunks. -- No development required
    3. Allow purchase of TNT. It would cost a LOT of Dei for each piece because these would: -- No development required
    • Destroy town-protected land they fall on (they still can't be placed on a claim plot though) -- Configuration change
    • Unclaim bombed town chunks automatically (this allows enemies to enter through a once protected/access-restricted barrier) -- Code change
    • Note: Placement of TNT will not be allowed. Making the only option to launch via cannons.
    4. Erase everyone's Dei and award voting players through random items each day (not Dei). -- Configuration change/plugin install
    5. Disable teleportation/disconnect commands in combat. -- Configuration change/plugin install

This would forever change main world, making town border protection and resident loyalty an ongoing critical process.

The only development required is the town plot unclaiming concept, and I'm open to other ways we could allow it other than TNT.

    Step 1: Erase everyone's Dei
Step 2: Start selling expensive TNT in DeityShop
Step 3: Wonder why nobody buys it

    Hmm...

Fun fact, you can craft TNT using doublechests of stockpiled gunpowder that we collected over years.

The only way to have towns in a server like that is by using a map already with towns, since anything built in that world afterwards would be an underground base, as in factions.

Sounds like the way for a few people to have some days of fun with the mayhem and then leave once the map is destroyed. If that's the point, and I feel it is, then I'm in. If the goal is to make this server playable again, then this idea needs some more foresight.

I'm wide open to tweaking the idea. Intention was to make TNT very hard to obtain so that sustained town bombing/unclaiming would be difficult. This would still allow towns to continue as they do today, but feel threatened at the very least.

Real damage would be costly, and depending on how secure towns are... Quite difficult.

Security would come from claiming restricted access plots around the town, and a physical wall too for bonus points. This would make it difficult to bomb the core of the town.

Each time a TNT is blasted, it may unclaim a town chunk and the enemy can advance by continuing to bomb claimed territory closer to the town. TNT would hurt a town physically (structural damage) and economically (loss of claimed land).

The main purpose of any towny-like plugin is to offer a safe place. If the goal of this suggestion is to threaten the safety of claimed land, we can just remove the Kingdoms plugin.

This conversation is getting a bit out of the original topic but okay. If people do not care about paying town taxes to keep their protected towns safe from being deleted (see this example), why would they care about claiming and re-claiming even more land (which also needs Dei in town bank) to keep their not-so-protected towns safe from being bombed by TNT? Isn't it easier to just delete towns in debts and let their former land be pillaged by griefers?

Towns would still be able to opt out, yes? Then mayors who want this could opt-in their towns, and mayors who don't could pay to keep their towns grief-proof.

Another idea: it would be nice if there was someway to ensure there were a few people in the town to defend it while it's being attacked. That's a problem with the usual PVP -- most of the raiding happens when no one is home.

More would need to be changed than just code. There'll also need to be changes to griefing rules. What kind of destruction is griefing, and what is considered playing by the rules of war? For instance, builds in the wild, while not protected by software, are protected by server rules in that griefing them is not allowed and demolishing them for the sake of expanding a town is also not allowed (if it was built there a while ago). And what about people who were banned for actions that previously were against the rules, but now are acceptable? And what about towns that can only afford to maintain some of their plots? Does that make the "wilderness" around the town available for destruction?

Anyways, some food for thought. How do you appease the destroyer while keeping the builder?
