    Cakes used to be the way to make money besides selling items to other players.
    We had a command to buy and sell a few items, one of which was cakes. You could sell a certain number of cakes before you would start to get less and less for them.

    Horses are good to make money as well. You can sell them well. Especially if you have a few fast ones.
