    If i do mine its around 12... But i honestly just find a natural cave and explore it to find gold/diamonds.

    Branching can be efficient for finding some diamonds, but I LOVE finding a good abandoned mine. Those are loaded.

    Do people actually buy redstone? It's so freakin' useless I just don't even bother mining it, except for McMMO because it gives a relatively high mining level XP.

    y=19 (Layer 13)
    Honestly, that is the best layer for me.
    Gold, Redstone and Diamond, but no lava.
    Lava doesn't normally spawn above layer 12. (Sometimes surface lava, but that's just a buggy-bug :p)

    I have always started my dig around 12-15 and do branch mining. If I need more gold I will move up a few levels (no more than 10) as others have said here. Digging just above bedrock and working up is not a bad plan either. Happy digging!

    I think 16 is best, a mix of diamonds and gold and there is a very low chance of running into lava.

    Around 15 is a good level to mine. I try to find a cavern that will lead me there. Along the way one can spot lapiz and iron. Useful minerals.
