I really did not care about trains you know... all i wanted was a nice looking mass transportation system that was actually used ... but then town portals came, and it all went to Censured

(Yea i really hate town portals, as it truely isolates towns from their surroundings, why ever leave a town, when you can portal out , port to a mining world , port here , port there)

Traveling is a core system in MC, really should not cater the lazy player.

And you all should really think hard on how to make a community that actually cooperates on projects. if i watch the map of the current world, its just towns, and town plots.

I am not saying imdeity should become a second *ServerICannotMention*. Something in the middle would be nice. And a means to limit player count would be nice. its all nice and dandy to
have 150+ players onboard, but the grief resulting from that is quite obvious.

anyway.. that was quite a bit more than 1 cent, but i felt like saying stuff.

    Enjoy,

    VV

I think the main difference is that we weren't a freebuild server since moving to Beta from Classic. With a focus on freebuilds with the ability to spawn resources, I'm sure such a task would not only be doable but fun and rewarding. Without a freebuild focus however, we have to focus on practicality and scalability.

Regardless of philosophical differences however you were a great admin and I'm sure once we launch the creative world, you will feel more in your element if you choose to participate.

Actually i do not like a full freebuild server. I prefer a server that focuses on building without the 'survival' element. In my ideal world, transportation should be relative hard (no porting), Resources should be mined (no cuboiding, unless for the common infrastructure like a mass transportation system), hunger should be removed, flying would not be allowed. Towns would not really exist as a fixed size grid of cells, but managed by the mayor, who is also responsible for law and order. My ideal world would not have a jail, people get banned for 1-3 days with mandatory work order after their time offline is done (clearing areas, even if it is on a prison dimension). Absolute zero tolerance on any crime, being ignorant is not acceptable.

Edit: Also builds will be required a certain standard, certainly no pixel art of any kind, unless its in a wall and conforms with a predefined standard (no mario's, for they are evil).

"practicality and scalability" - I can understand that, but still a server should have a really great spawn and mass transportation system (that is actually being used), its nearly a must for any good server. Perhaps a system where a player can run at 4x speed in a specific tunnel (as an alternative to a rail), perhaps a mod exists, or can be made for that.

I do like the idea of using a mass railway system since you can get to see the landscape and other players' towns. Perhaps other nations instead can set up their own railway system instead. Let the other players get involved in making their own railway system. It shouldn't be the main build for a survival/economy server but it does ring up some traditional nostalgia to the free-roam like RPG system where you have to walk and travel everywhere to see towns.

While you can indeed minimize griefing by making players walk / use transportation, there will still be griefing no matter what. Don't let anything I said above be seen as a way I do not support your idea, it's quite the opposite. There's some flaws like others have mentioned that could be ironed out. If these flaws are somehow covered and a newly revamped system of yours takes in effect on the server, then I'd be very glad to actually walk from town to town. It gives it more of the exploration a lot of servers need. The server's asset here is the community alone so I'm sure there's some middle ground that the majority can agree with.

Don't know your plans about map reset Deity, what is going to stay and what will be lost, but if I loose my town and all its structures, I probably won't create new one. Nevertheless, managing world rail system would be a function that suits me best :) I've already made a connection between few towns, including subway system in Masuria, so I know more then basics of how the rail works and how to make it being efficient (of course I don't have much options cause lots of CraftBook stuff is disabled).
Summarizing, after map reset I would really love to help VV (if he decides to go back to the server) in the 'world rail system' build and maintenance. It's really cool idea and I'm sad that present ring-rail system is falling into ruin.

    Thanks

I would think that a rail system IS required with the new map. It offers a way to show new people coming to the server what we have created (assuming towns are made near the railway) just having a portal service make people lazy. and would mean you miss out on a lot on inspiration and ideas when you are going to build your own structure/ building.

This would mean that new people (NEWBIES! ;D) would just start at the basics and have a cobble square as the fort. which covers the current land and has left me feeling as though the map (current state) is just to cluttered and a waste of time designing any thing with great meaning and AWESOMENESS! because the surrounding structures would just be a disgrace. In the name of the server I would like to extend my vote with VV and a number of other server members I would think, that a railway service would be incredible important in the new maps existence (If quality is still a meaning in the Kingdom and not all about votes.)

** And the meaning of -Quality to me at least is something when looked at gives you ideas and really makes you think to yourself how was this built :/

A great example I have is this.

My last idea of a small corridor deep near bedrock (perhaps even build on level 1 or 2) where players go to and run at 4x speed is the best fitting really ... it really IS zero maintenance. But i am not sure a bucket plugin exists that allows that .

Disadvantage is that players do not get to see the lands they pass through.
Advantage, there is no visual footprint of the mass transportation system except for the nexus nodes every 1000+ blocks from the spawn

I kinda silly i did not think of this a couple of months ago. Also we would need to make it look original enough, not to be too much of a copy cat of other servers with simular setups

Oh and nice vid, Ace. Though if that is spawn i think it to be a bit to heavy.

perhaps rather than the rail system, just portals like the ones from the capital (not portals specific to each town). you would still have to walk from portals to nearby towns, and have the same number of portals as the number of stations you were mentioning (1000 / 1500 block distances)

Excelent suggestion, that would work too.

So nexus points still are at 1000 block intervals (or more), and somehow make a portal in each one, with a matching portal in the capital.

But then the challenge would be to make the 'portal room' somehow functional, as it would contain 80+ portals

There are ways to do it really, perhaps a room where the ground is a MAP of the world, with different colored blocks representing towns (with a sign with its name), diamond blocks representing nexus points.
Left clicking on the nexus block would portal the player to that nexus point, where he/she needs to go on foot to where ever the town is

or 8 portals in the capital portal room, and much like the portals there now, they could be right clicked to display a list of where they can go (although the ones there now dont have correct directions (i wanted to go far east and ended up by Invictus which is to the west on the LiveMap))

I like both ideas. A railway infrastructure would be useful, and everyone could see the land as they travel. However, It might take a while to get a town far out. A simple trip to the mall for some diamonds could take 10-15 minutes. A portal room would be my favorite idea, with the map and diamond block teleporters. (Someone would need to keep this up to date for the new towns that are made). And then from the nexus points on the map towns could make their own railways/roads to their towns, creating community projects. However, like vv said, the portal room/map might get confusing.

I don't know, both ideas have draw backs and advantages. I like both =D

I'm just saying, Imdeity, there are many people who would like to help out with the railway, not just staff. Personally, I'd love to help design and maintain a railway system, as I made one on another server (which had a 3000x3000 map). So, it wouldn't be a dedicated staff member on the team to make the railway, all it would need would just be a mod from time to time to fix some regioning. The railway can be maintained by the trusted community, so that allieviates the job load on the staff.

And about the two worlds, creative and survival, there could be this big portal at spawn which has a storyline to it -- like "the town was made around a mystical portal, which, legends have it, can take you to a land where wordly issues are nothing, and blocks are in forever abundance" -- and that adds to the RP feel, rather then a network of portals through both maps which just destroy the feel. Survival could have the railway system, as it is survival, down-to-earth and natural, nothing special about it; and Creative could have a portal network, as its a mystical place where people can fly around and have unlimited resources :\. The different transport systems relating to the different themes of the world creates a balance, and I think would make transport more varied then it is now, with /t spawn *townname* or /go wild, which has just taken the exploration fun out of it for me... not to mention that portal network beneath spawn.

Edit - maybe, since the map is 8000x8000, there could be 4 portals all 2000 out from spawn in the cardinal directions, in conjunction with the railroad idea. The portals halfway out cut the travelling time there is bound to be for the further - out towns, while keeping the railroad to get to the towns, as the railroads would branch off the portals and spawn, the portal would only get you close to your town, you still need to use the railroad

I've only been on the server since late October, and apart from the first few days where I ran around in a random empty-lookign-on-the-map area of Wilderness trying to find somewhere the looked worth building i, I've never explored the rest of the map. I've visited a few towns, but only when extended an invite for a tour via the /recruit channel, which I think is a great shame. There are some AMAZING places out there, but most (of the active ones / of the ones I visited) seem to restrict it to visitors only when accompanied.

On the live map, I can see there's a massive railway... but I know nothing about it. Who built it? Who can use it? Where does it go? What is it for? No idea! Again, a shame, I think. And I didn't even know until reading this thread that the NSWE portals give you a list of locations - I assumed they dumped you in the wilderness randomly in the direction you picked. I've never used one to find out.

I use /go main, /t spawn, and /go mine. That's basically it. It feels like the server is much much smaller than it actually is. (Mostly because the live map makes everywhere look dauntingly far to reach.)

I wholeheartedly love VV's ideas of a near-bedrock mass transport system, the map room idea, and even a "blight on the landscape" surface-level railway. (I think that could be done really nicely, if it followed the count ours of the land with bridges & tunnels, rather than just a big blocky, though impressively engineered, square railway ring. Not particularly medieval though, so that's the only reason I don't think it would be particularly appropriate for the server.) How better to admire the surface landscape in large quantity than travelling at speed on the surface? As someone not that far off a newbie, I think folks who have been around long enough to know they want to donate or to be well entrenched in the server (for examples), sometimes forget what it's like to see the server with fresh eyes, no magic carpet, and a precious few possessions ;)

Anyway. VV's right: using /t spawn name and /go main means new folks almost never see much of the amazing creativity on the server, without making a special effort to go looking (which is then well away from nighttime protection, food gathering, oh, and has high risk of loss of items you can't yet afford to lose if the worst happens and you die "somewhere"). So finding a way to limit it or to ease access to the rest of the map strikes me as a good thing.

I too play MC because I like building things, and would gladly chip in with global, regional, or other projects because other people so often have awesome visions that make mine feel pedestrian in comparison ;) And on that note, I'll also point out that us newish folk tend to not be allowed to chip in on town projects because we aren't known, leaving us a choice of high-grief-risk wilderness building, or plot-only building. So you might have more willing worker grunts than you think...

There could be a group of specialist with some mod powers to build and maintenance transportation system on the new map. What I mean is sth like transportation department which will be one of more departments, that could be made to improve server management. Every mod (or group of mods) will have a special position and duties binding to it, i.e. general order department for checking tickets or gamecode/mods department for all plugin stuff. Of course they will be controlled by higher rank mods or admins.
There is such list on moderators apply thread but I don't know if it's in use now...

That sounds like a great idea :D having a special team of people that solely (besides actually playing) work on railroads, server buildings, etc. They would be given some world edit abilities (with cuboid limits) and the ability to edit the protected railways regions on the map.

    An example:

I love the combination idea of the 4 primary portals, or 8 if you go diagonal as well and the underground railway system with the stations being the only part above ground.

Everyone also complains about the massive griefing that will happen with it? Then combine in the group of trusted players/mods. Give 2 or 3 people the ability to turn the blocks for the railway into honeypots and make specifically griefing the rail system, along with general griefing, one of the starting rules that a player sees.

    Just an idea.

mm, I like this idea as it a/ allieviates the workload that would be there normally for the staff, and b/ its a low-key assignment, so its a perfect opportunity for the next generation of mods to prove themselves that they can be trusted and are worthy of full modship. Normally, want-to-be mods would have a hard time proving themselves to be mod, as there's nothing really low-key enough for them to be entrusted with, this is the perfect opportunity.
