VV's chrismass recommendation for the map reset.

* Spawn at 0,0
* a dual Railways running in the cardinal directions, at level 11
* a ring railway at 1500 block interval for, spawn
* Stations on every railway intersection/nexus
* All stations have 10+ arrival departure booths on every station nexus so people can connect to
a station
* above all ABOLISH town portals to actually force people to use the global mass transportation system. (Allow donators to use /spawn, Allow use of the Bed as a home spawn at death)
* Find a way to encourage ppl to participate in global projects

Hmm, it could solve peoples problems of not having enough money, what about coming back from the mine world? If only donators can use /spawn then many people would get stuck in he mine world, unless you want the mine world gone? It's a good idea none the less. Maybe just /spawn for everyone

 

well, if /spawn would be removed, except for donators -- then I think what would need to replace it would be /station. This command would teleport you to the nearest railway station (would have a cooldown to avoid abuse), so it keeps the convienience of not having to look like crazy to find the way to START to find your way to wherever you want to go. You would just have to /station, and then hop on a train to wherever you want. It keeps the whole feel that you are going for, vvyenaya, of that people can't just instantly teleport to their destinations, while making travel the slight bit easier so its not a chore *I know, for me, having NO teleporting, not even to the nearest station would make travel a chore, and discourage it.*, while making sure that travel isnt just a matter of a command.

Maybe just keep /spawn for everyone, but instead of town ports or those N/S/E/W portals at spawn, theres just the train station. Remember, its all good to encourage travelling by using trains, but don't make it a chore to actually get to the train station to start off with.

Sorry VV, but i completely dislike your idea, even as railway fan.
As Leviathan said, it is a scar on land. I have sad grin on my face everytime i cross actual railway ring and see how it tears the countryside apart.
And if i understand right that for most people there will be no other possibility to travel, it will force people to settle around stations, this will result in few big cities and everything else will starve from bad logistics.

I would rather see that big towns can claim more plots so they can protect their own railways from one city to another.

 

I would love to see this to work, but i have to agree with the opposing argument, this would cause more porblems then it would fix.

* All railways are at level 11 and are only 3/4 blocks high, there is NO scar on the land at all; its completely hiddden (and protected)

* The only visible structures would be above ground stations (that allow people to connect to, also underground)

* Town portals are the worst IDEA in the existance of minecraft mods ... it makes travel WAY too easy.
A change perhaps, if portals are to stay :
ONLY town members may portal in (not possible to disable)

As for me returning, when above ideas were to come in use in some form or way, i may consider returning (however it would be as a regular mortal)

I like your very last idea, might be a good thing, except people will be unable to live in the wilderness, and enjoy their freedom.

 

Those that want to live in the wilderness do so by their own choice ... and even THEN they have the choice to settling near a station nexus point (on a map of 4000x4000, with every 1000 blocks a railway nexus, there could potentially be 80 nexus points where players can live near to, with maximum of 500 block walking distance)

With a 1500 block gap between nexus' there would be 24 possible points.

So living in the wilderness is NO problem whatsover. you are never far away from a point.

Another alternative is to work with gates (if trains are too slow) ... its perfectly possible.

 

You of all people know first hand what a pain it was to maintain a rail system that you now propose be built on a even bigger scale.
I've always respected you as a admin and your tenacity but i could never understand the fetish for a rail system.

Note. i play currently on a 16k x 16k server with such a system. works awesomely well there (it is however not a survival server, as none can die)

So its possible. They even build it by community, block by block, no cuboid or anything.

Yes it will require alot of work (if done by hand, not so by cuboid) and some maintenance (unless well protected).
No pain, No gain.

I do sometimes wonder why there's so much resistence to have a nice, well build infrastructure, and you appear to favor a system with next to no effort spend on it, where all the server is, is a bunch of towns living in their micro cosmos

Perhaps its because i am no real admin, never was, but a builder by heart and its one of those instances where the builder can't seem to agree with management ;P

Anyhow, hope the map reset will go well. as you get only a single chance to set up right.
