You could modify the current recipe to use 1 flint and 2 feathers. It would still use the zombie flesh and the green so it would make a bit of sense. Also, are you thinking about removing the re-hydrated flesh and just using plain zombie flesh? That would make it a whole lot more convenient!

Maybe it could include spider web, since spider web is sticky?

It could also use gelatin (used to make jello), which is derived from collagen, which is found in animal products such as bone, skin, ligaments, muscle tissue etc., so some other ingredients could be:

    fish
    animal meat
    rotten flesh
    bone

The green colour may naturally form from mold growing on the slime (maybe that's partly why slimes spawn in swamps?), so from the above ingredients, rotten flesh would be the best bet because mold and/or bacteria would be growing on it. So the recipe for the slime could use:

    rotten flesh
    spider web

Maybe the final recipe could look something similar to this:

Edit: web is made with a slime ball and 8 string . . . above recipe could be problematic

Here's a really neat article about a weird life-form called "slime mold": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slime_mold
It sounds similar to Minecraft slimes. Slime mold needs moisture and dead plant material to grow. Maybe a recipe could look something like this:

Where in place of grass the recipe can use any kind of vegetation, even paper

I like that. You could also use mushrooms, which would actually make them useful lol.

Yes but you need to get the first block first XD. But does it only spread if you're nearby?

There are mushroom islands on Main World, just look at the map.

And yes, it spreads only when the chunk is active (players are around), same as farming crops grow only when the chunk is active.

Edit: Back to the topic, here is another idea for slimeballs:

(should also return an empty bottle)

My idea for the slimeball recipe. Uses a snowball as a stackable source of water to use as the base, some lime dye to give it colour, and some sticky spider silk (string). Makes 2 slimeballs.

Another possibility for a stack-able water source: wet sponges. The recipe would return dry sponges.

I had closed this thread because the revision is up, but thought I should make a post summarizing the changes done, just to be sure everyone is on the same page:

    Removed recipes:

    - Recipes for items/blocks that are obtainable in any other way: Coal, Lapis, Redstone, Diamond and Emerald Ores; Gold and Chainmail Armor (Zombies and Skeletons randomly spawn wearing these pieces of armor and may drop them when killed); Obsidian and Book (Flesh Bound Book).
    - Items created only for recipes that had 'two steps': e.g. Coal Blackened Diorite, Magic Wand, Rehydrated Flesh...
    - Replaced recipes: Quartz (replaced by a Quartz Ore recipe), Sea Lantern (Replaced by a recipe for Prismarine Crystals) and Boiled Egg (Replaced by Blank Spawn Egg).

    Revised Recipes:

    - Recipes that were considered too complicated (too many ingredients, difficult shapes, etc): Black Dye, Blaze Powder, Ghast Tear, Netherrack, Soulsand, Heads (no random results), Slimeball.
    - Overly expensive recipes: Blaze Rod, Bottle O' Exp, Enderstone, Prismarine Shards, Prismarine Crystals (replacing Sea Lantern's recipe) and Quartz Ore (replacing Quartz's recipe).
    - 'Recycle' and 'Random Loot' recipes: Re-balanced the results and added new items for some recipes. Enchanted pickaxes were removed from the 'Recycle Pickaxes' recipe. The minimum level to craft the 'Loot Crate' was reduced from 25 to 15. The level requirement for the 'Recycle Pickaxe' recipe was removed.

    Added Recipes:
    - Spawn Eggs: Rabbit, Bat, Chicken, Cow, Pig and Sheep eggs were added, also included a recipe for a 'Blank Spawn Egg' (replacing Boiled Egg)...and a little secret.
    - Heads: Creeper, Skeleton and Zombie heads now have each their own recipes. And Wither heads could come soon!
    - Recycle Arrows recipe: Arrows can be 'broken down' into its ingredients (Flint, Sticks and Feathers).

Some more info, interesting facts (imo) and tips:

    - All biome requirements were removed. Not really ALL, but pretty much.. *wink
    - The new Netherrack recipe uses Mycelium. Though kinda hard to find, Mycelium spreads like grass. and can be farmed
    - Sea Lanterns, though cheaper to make, are still a bit expensive, Prismarine Shards, however, are much cheaper than before and might be a viable building material now.
    - Exp Bottles are cheaper but cost Exp to craft. Spending 30 levels on this will give 28,5 levels worth of bottles on average. Not a craftsman? Bottle and sell your Exp!
    - Quartz Ore's recipe isn't much cheaper than Quartz's, but now you get the ore instead of the item, what can help if you use the right tools.. :) Fortune Pickaxes!! Use those!!

So there they are! I hope the revised recipes make some items more available and things more interesting.
Let me know of any errors or issues, here or in the guide.

    Thanks!
