    My 2 cents:

No Chest Shops. They ruined the economy.

Back on the First Map, you had shops like IDS that everyone would go too, it forced people to actually trade, and interact. (the point of a video game. hrmm)
The mall ruins this interaction, interaction mean retention. People can do a command and buy everything they need.

Even getting rid of shops and charging like 10k to make a shop plot within towns, it makes people explore, talk, and trade more. Interaction means retention. Retention means donations. retention means more people online. retention equals better playing experience for everyone.

The grass is always greener. During the 2012 map, a new thread would pop up almost weekly complaining about the lack of mall. (http://imdeity.com/threads/when-will-they-mall-be-open.12346/, http://imdeity.com/threads/refocusing-efforts.11481/, http://imdeity.com/threads/when-will-everything-work-again.11396/, http://imdeity.com/threads/the-mall.9260/, http://imdeity.com/threads/does-the-buying-selling-chests-work.10698/). It was difficult or even impossible to get many materials. The average player does not want to spend hours spamming /trade or on the forums searching for someone who has the specific item they need, only to wait days for the seller to come online; they want to get it now. Players can still talk to others who are visiting the mall in local chat, but with a mall, they are just not forced to have that interaction. The mall provides competition, reducing prices for consumers, and allows them to spend more time actually building (the real point of minecraft, if you ask me).

Not quite sure how chest shops ruin the economy, as the prices, quantities and availability are set by the players, same as if there weren't any chest shops and we just used the Trade channel.

Firstly, the point of a video game is to have fun, whatever that may be for you. Multiplayer means I can interact if I so choose, when I so choose.

Secondly, we are an international server and have players spread across multiple time zones, so I may be on when other people are not. Mall shops and the Trade Forum on the website allows people the possibility to trade at their own convenience, whether they are online or not, maximising the potential for trade & income. Unnecessarily penalising me because I'm not in the same time zone as my potential market makes no sense.

Making a shop plot within a town, though sounds like a good idea, is exhaustive compared to the current Malls. I see three main problems which would need to be overcome.

    1) Navigation to the shop. I would have to know where it was, if the town didn't decide to put the shop at their spawn.
    2) Teleportation to multiple towns to compare pricing, as opposed to 4 different malls with multiple shops. Less convenient.
    3) Possibility that the town has been set to private, therefore making that town shop just for members of that town.

Our retention is also higher than it used to be.

    Many thanks,
    Seph

Had to commented cuz I literally loled... Shops only control players if they're lazy or have no time...

Which first map did you play on? I started playing in April 2011 and we had a mall by June 2011.

I'm disappointed that no one in this thread is thinking outside the box on what can be done to liven up the player economy by getting to the root of the problem. What to do with the actual stuff instead of hoarding it?

You have actually taken some interesting measures to liven up the player economy yourself (or at least bring some fluctuation to it). Remember the times you tweaked settings of the mining world seed? If you could figure out ways to replicate this on a monthly basis for a slew of different items, it could push spontaneous/unexpected demand for a specific good thus making the economy much more interesting and realistic.

Yeah, for sure. That's certainly under my consideration. I hope to have something else that will excite the economy (and players) coming soon.
