This is in reply to this, and Levi's comment - we don't wish to be completely closed off. We would like for new players to be allowed to explore our town, without having an escort. Being completely closed off, while it prevents the unwanted from setting foot within our city limits, also limits the curious players who may want to explore the town. But with a blacklist system, we don't have to scoop up every player in a net and close ourselves off to keep two or three away from us.

And a blacklisting does not have to be permanent. Another mayor can overturn it if he feels it's unjust.

It kinda would make sense if there was a town blacklist, i mean, they already exist in spoken form (from my time as an assistant there would be people other towns would warn us about letting into our town for multiple, unbannable, reasons) so why not in a more reliable form of communication?

How I understand this idea is to evade taxes in a way. You constantly say that they are griefing (or just being on those plots to not be ejected) on land that is unclaimed by your town (in order to play less taxes as a whole). I definitely see why you would want to do this as a Mayor and keeping the town afloat. But ultimately you just don't want to pay taxes so you are accepting that risk of being griefed on the parts of land that are not claimed by the town.

I look at it as a problem you already must have considered or you wouldn't be making this post in the first place. So you either need to claim those parts or in the case of being griefed make the tickets but I would have to agree with Gwenhywar and Sephronia on the simple fact that more than likely this would be used to do bad by some and cause more problems than it solved. As griefing is concerned there is always tickets to get it rolled back.

So basically, to try to get this suggestion through, we need a list of what players could do in your town that would warrant "banning" them from it, but things that aren't server offenses. So far I have got the town matter grief, but I didn't read in-depth on everything. An easy thing to do would be for the reasons to be posted and then have Majora edit them into the original post as well. Once we have a list of that, we can show it to Deity and he can figure out something. If he does start working on a solution, it will take a while, but to convince Deity it is needed, there has to be enough reasons with enough weight, otherwise it is a lot of time put into a plugin that is just going to be abused by every hormone raging mayor on the server.

I would start listing off reasons, except I can't think of any. Most of the "not ban-worthy" reasons I can think of fall under harassment, which I have noticed goes more unreported than not on this server. I cannot stress enough how much players need to report harassment, because it is not okay, and there isn't a single moderator or admin who wants harassment to be something that exists on this server. I know a great many players who read this post also read the ban appeals, and I am certain that you all have seen a player wanting to be unbanned because they had a poor response to harassment. There doesn't need to be a single ban appeal like that. Take screenshots, send them to moderators, and if the person keeps harassing you, take more screenshots and keep sending them our way. I know some people are discouraged from doing so because they don't see the players getting told to behave publicly all the time, but just because you don't see something doesn't mean nothing is happening. Report problems, play nice with your friends, avoid your enemies, and we all will have a nicer time in game.

Not to butt in here, but i recal the time i personally was getting harrased (being called a freak and my actual family/living arangments being insulted ) i was told to ignore the person...so obviously people are reluctant to say anything because nothing actually gets done about it, especially as much as you say it does

Also to name a few things that get passed around from town to town,
    harassment
constantly asking souly for assistant without doing anything
Constant minor griefs people get told to deal with because its town matters (same for petty few item theft)
Sexism (ive made tickets on people and theyve gone nowhere for tjis one...)
    Constant disregard for town rules
    ect.ect

I think most new players do not just visit towns anyways. Usually when a player joins they are either ignored or begged to join a town immediately in result of some weird competition people set up. The new players progress by joining a town without a chance to learn how the server functions. If a town is set to private, there is little to no deterrence from someone joining. I feel that it would actually be good for some players (such as myself) because of the safety from griefing would be enhanced. I am comfortable with the ticket system we have already and provides work for moderators. I never had a constant problem as a mayor of players entering my town and griefing or harassing other players, it was very uncommon. Especially if a town is socially active, there is no problem with/t eject for a one time warning and reporting if it continues.

    That's not very nice. :(

    Hi Fiver,

That doesn't sound like an acceptable response by the person who told you that, and any kind of harassment is totally unacceptable, full stop.

As has been said, if someone bothers you after being told to stop, report it to a Mod and send screenshots our way. We -will- step in. If you think a Mod's judgement is unsatisfactory, you are more than welcome to talk to the Head Mod, Gwenhywar (like in my signature), and it will be looked into.

Could you clarify please what you mean by 'passed around from town to town' ?

If a member of your town is disregarding your town rules, kick them. If they are griefing your town and are a resident, kick them. If you feel they are incompatible with your town, kick them. As long as you follow the Eviction guidelines, it should be good.

    Many thanks,
    Seph

Just clarifying as this is off topic a bit, but the harrasment case was about 2 years ago now and had gone to admins, not like i can overrule the server owners desicion regarding it.

But by passed around from town to town i mean quite literally that, if someone gets kicked from a town and they are seen trying to join up another, or the messege is sent server whide so and so acepted other person in their town a quick message to the mayor/staff warning them the reasons of their kick happens more often than not (or at least it did last map) also im sorry if none of this makes no sense but its almost 3am and im already running on 4 hours of sleep...

Ah thank you. Yes, I can understand that. If a player has a bad rep, then yes, it does get passed around to other town staff, and then it's up to the new town to decide to take the risk or not.

    Many thanks,
    Seph

I say NO to sole blacklist idea if reasoned by griefing - that should be prevented by claimed land. But i say YES to the blacklist idea if reasoned otherwise: stealing dropped items, killing pets, waiting in front of the house staring into windows.

There is one possible way to balance the tax evasion - every name on the blacklist should be taxed by lets say 50 dei added to town tax e.g. it would be better to claim 25 plots than to blacklist one person. If some of my residents would feel uncomfortable having someone around, i would make a deal with them - donate 1500 dei to town bank and i will blacklist that person for one month.

Beside blacklist, we could also add a whitelist as suggested earlier :)

A lot can change in two years Fiver, but I guess if people are willing to be abused and not say anything about it, it isn't my place to yell at them to do something different. But if things don't get reported, nothing changes. Many bullies thrive off of not getting in trouble for what they do, that is why the internet has so many of them. I can say with absolute certainty that I, and clearly Seph as well, will not ignore these things, and I honestly cannot think of a moderator who would ignore such behavior.

Just saying, if we want to stop bullying and harassment, the first thing to do is to speak up. Not every situation is perfect, and very little is going to be ideal, but coming from the hands of a regular pessimist, things only get worse if people say nothing.

Yes, it can get abused, but so can the existing protective programs we have. By that logic, we should also remove /t eject because a "hormone raging mayor" could just eject anyone they see...

so how do you like an idea to pay tax for every name on the blacklist?

but surely a white-list is just more paperwork, when you simply wish to keep 1 or 2 people out, instead of having to add every single person to the whitelist except the person you are trying to keep out a blacklist works much better when you only need to add 1 or 2 names to the barred list.

Maybe make all your town plots pvp, that way you just kill them? :)

Setting pvp allowed costs 2000 Dei per plot. I doubt there is a town able to try it.

Here's how I made a blacklist system for Mirasol on the last map.

    1) Claim two plots adjacent to each other. One plot should be claimed by the town, the other should be claimed by an alt.
    2) Make an enclosed room around the two plots, with a top on it to prevent blacklisted donators from flying out.
    3) Set town spawn within the room, on the plot claimed by the town.
    4) On the edge of the plot claimed by the alt, get a craftsman to build the system shown below. Make it so that anyone trying to exit the room has to cross the piston.
    5) Log onto your alt's account, and add anyone you want to blacklist to it's friends list. Set it's USE permission to F (friend).
    6) When someone on the blacklist steps on any of the pressure plates, the piston will extend and the gravel will move up, blocking their path. [IMG]
When someone not on the blacklist steps on the pressure plates, it will say "you do not have permission to use pressure plates here", and the piston will not extend. They can cross freely across the gravel and into the town.
    7) The only issue is, town staff and moderators have permissions to every plot. You can place a doorway on the plot claimed by the town for moderators and staff members to use. Or, make a private town warp for town staff members to use to get to town without going through the system.

I like the effort you have put into it, but it has one serious fault: If you add people to friendlist, they have all permissions (e.g. edit+use+access) so blacklisted people can dig their way out from the spawn.

To make it completely secure you need to cover the blacklist plot with protection stone area, but that also takes parts of three neighboring plots so its not usable everywhere.
