A brand new map, and a brand new road network!
The map has reset, and we already have brand new towns, though with the new map comes a lack of intertown transport other than /t warps and /t spawns. Some towns were created in plains/savannah biomes (these two biomes have horses naturally spawn), but these horses have a bit of trouble getting between towns, especially with the steep mountains and terrain. Last map, people had to use live map to navigate the roads as the roadways had no route numbers (with the exception of EastLink and a few other roadways). To solve this problem, I have proposed a new and improved road network for this map.

Some questions that might be asked about said road network:

Q: EastLink last map has narrow lanes. Will the traffic lanes be wider this map?
A: Yes, lanes will have 3m width this map compared to the 2m wide lanes last map.

Q: Will there be interchanges or controlled-access roads?
A: Unlike last map, there will be little to no freeways. It'll mostly be 2 lane divided or undivided roadways with at-grade intersections. Lanes will be 3m wide as stated above. Turn arrows will be present at intersections that have turn lanes, and merge arrow where a lane merges with another lane. Bigger towns may have four lane roads and/or frontage roads along the mainline lanes.

Q: Will there be a route numbering/color allocation this map?
A: There will be route numbering this map, with main roads numbered 1-9, secondary roads 10-99, and beltways/spur routes 101-999. Routes are classified into three classes: National Route, Kingdom Route, County Route, and Business Route, which will be explained below.

Q: What about towns with private access permissions?
A: These towns will usually be bypassed, or they (the town) could make the streets that the routes go through public access permission.

    Road Classifications:

N.R. : National Route - these are roads with world importance. These roads usually link capital roads that end at edge of protected zone to the outer areas of the map. National Route 1 forms a circle around the map.

K.R. : Kingdom Route - these are roads with kingdom importance. These roads usually link towns in the same kingdom together.

C.R. : County Route - Roads with local importance. County Routes usually connect kingdomless towns to KR's and NR's.

BUS : Business Route - Old routes of towns bypassed by ring roads or bypasses. Example: National Route 1 goes around Example_Town. The old route of NR1 through Example_Town becomes BUS NR1.

    Current Road Connection Proposals:
Imagination to Caldera: No route number assigned yet, but will most likely be a N.R. Possible connection to Oakdale via a County Route linked to this N.R. via an at-grade intersection. Road may be extended north to capital road that comes from spawn zone and green mall. If Caldera gets big enough, Caldera could build a ring road and move this NR onto it and make the old route a K.R. or a business loop.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you have a road connection proposal between towns not yet shown in this forum thread, please reply below.

    Many thanks,

There should probably be rules concerning what kind of road the town in question wants. Let's say within 200 blocks the town decides the material's.

I'd be down as having Oakdale in between the Caldera and Imagination road or through a link, however it happens. I'll probably change it around a bit around my area, but I'll keep it pretty.

Oakdale will be connected to the Caldera to Imagination highway via a County Route that ends at an intersection somewhere in the middle on the highway between Caldera and Imagination. I'll post a map soon showing the road corridor and when the Oakdale link gets built I'll assign a route number to it. The Caldera to Imagination highway has been assigned the National Route 2 designation, so that road now has a defined route number.

I have a question regarding the Capitol access areas. There are only 2 access points with roads. I for one would like to have roads around the capitol to allow easier flow of traffic and also placeing a circle/square of road close around the capitol will keep issues like private towns from interrupting the flow of traffic as well.

I must say that I am in strong opposition against building another road network. The last one was useless, only 1 or 2 people were using it. It cost a lot of materials and time and destroyed much of the nature on the map.

Yeah...so....what kind of traffic do you get on these roads? Wouldn't footpaths better suit the aesthetics of the map? I think I used the road system on foot one time just to see what it was like.

Only small paths are needed really, thats why the roads i built last map were wide enough for a horse and thats all. maybe 2 blocks wide 4 at most.

If you have 2 towns close to each other it would be fun to have a derby, and race from 1 town to the other with multiple routes to divide the traffic that rejoin later, this would be interesting as the fastest horse might take the longest route xD.

Personally, I think this is an ambitious idea but really not practical for this map. Like Lego said, the old road was fairly unused and I'd personally just like to see smaller roads connecting towns nearby. For example, the Southern and Eastern quadrants have many towns in them, so connecting these towns could serve a purpose to united these towns. On the other hand, connecting say Doha with Anavasi would be quite unpractical because people would much rather warp to the other side of the map. I'd support a smaller road system between kingdoms rather than such a widespread road system.

    We shall fix that asap!

You may have not used the roads but Others did quite alot. And I was not the only one. And besides, this is a thread about building roads not bashing them please.

I'm not bashing, simply suggesting that this road network be organized between town mayors and / or kingdoms as to be more efficient. I like the idea of roads all I said was that such a large network like the last one may be a bit overkill. In fact I did use the roads on the last map but I'm suggesting smaller more efficient road systems to save everyone time and make it easier for everyone to travel.

I like the idea as much as you do, but I'm just giving everyone my two cents about how this road system could be built, no bashing intended.

Well.... yeah i agree with you 100% who wants to build ridiculously long roads or wide roads, when you could be putting those materials into a town instead?
I like having some small path like roads, but huge highways are a waste of space and resources, i think they make the map look messy, if you build a long highway accross the map, you do not want to cover up areas where people could start towns in open space. But yeah, i think really all a mayor needs to do to make an inter town road, speak to the other mayor, and if they are happy to go ahead with it then great.

We dont want to be in a situation where we have more roads than plots. We could build some nice small scenic bridleways, doesnt even need a road, I know this because my horse Blanche Devereaux doesnt like being ridden on roads, She much prefers grass under hoof, all we would need to do is make a few rest stops along the ways, with a few small stables or hitching posts.

    ~Bridleways~FTW!

I am glad i mentioned horses to you now, and i am also pleased Minibirde showed you the reigns, was it as wonderful as you imagined?

You know I'm willing to build roads :) But I do agree I like them to look gentle with the surroundings, more as part of it (not like interstates, sorry).

Roads Update: There is now a marked jack-o-lantern trail between the western capital border and Doha. Construction over the coming weekend will replace the jack-o-lantern trail with a cobblestone roadway.
    Features:
    • Service centre just west of the capital border next to the east end of tunnel. The service centre will include redstone vending machines, lodging, and horse stables.
    • Small lookouts/rest areas, placed at roughly 500 block intervals
    • Connects Doha to the capital and the red mall shops
    Road Design and widths:
    • Doha CBD to plains/birch forest transition bridge over river: Doha-style default street design
    • From Doha plains/birch forest transition to 500 blocks from the west capital border: 3m wide cobblestone slab winding roadway, conforming with terrain. This section is currently a pumpkin trail, which already conforms to terrain. The final cobblestone road will generally follow the route of the pumpkin trail.
    • Capital border to 500 blocks west of the capital border: 2 lane sandstone highway with tunnel through the mountains. Currently under construction, construction temporarily suspended (due to my midterm exams) from Monday to Thursday.
This road will be signposted as National Route 2.

    Many thanks,
    asdfjkll

Newsflash: Doha to West Capital Border Road is completed!
The Doha Department of Main Roads has recently completed a new roadway (National Highway 2) between the west capital border and Doha. The road is about 4 kilometers long and it takes 7 minutes on a 11m/s horse to get from /mall red to the northern portions of Doha. Nine bridges and three tunnels were built as part of this project.
Note that within the capital border lies a 100 meter long "missing link" between the DMR-maintained sandstone road, which ends at the capital border, and the server-maintained cobblestone roadway, which ends 100 meters away from the west capital border. The missing link is shown in detail on the map of the area below:
When donator precious stones return, work will start on the service centre, which will include vending machines, lodging, horse parking, and a small walking trail with picnic tables. Work on the service centre, when construction starts, will take approximately 2-3 days to complete.

    Many thanks,
    asdfjkll
Head of the Doha Department of Main Roads
