I personally believe that while there may be some negatives to creating a world map, these negatives can be overcome. Here is my opinion on this.

    A.
This is true, there is a challenge in the way Minecraft worlds work, but there can be many fun challenges and adventures with a world painter map as well. If you ever played other games such as Skyrim, while the world is not a bunch of randomly generated biomes, you will probably notice that their world is quite fun and adventurous to play in. In other words, I'm saying that there can be all kinds of adventurous and challenging places implemented on the map, and fun to explore.

    B.
The capability of world painter is actually quite amazing. People may want different terrains to make towns on, including multiple terrains in one town, but with world painter, that's not only achievable, but terrains can me made even better. There can still be all sorts of biomes in one area, but with world painter, we can also make the biomes be in more realistic shapes, and put them together in a nicer fashion, such as having a sandy beach by the ocean, jungle along the border of that beach, grasslands behind that, and mountains (even snow covered) surrounding all of this. It would still bring out variety in landscapes, but also be in a more realistic fashion, rather than having dots of jungle in many different places here and there and being completely random, or having very small biomes, surrounded by more small biomes.

    C.

As long as the person making the map is a good artist and does a good job, I think they can achieve what people want, with diversity of land, while making it much better and more attractive to players. For example; beautiful mountain ranges can be made and nice appealing patterns such as surrounding a giant grassland area, where there are rivers, and waterfalls coming from the mountains. There are many artistic things one can get into. Also, having a nice world pattern that makes sense, would probably look nicer on the live map.

    -this Rabbit's opinion :)

I'm just adding a quick reply here. I have had some random maps that were so bad with the randomness of the biomes that I would have preferred a map that was pre-made over it. Yes the random map was a challenge but being on an island in the middle of an ocean where the nearest land mass was 1500 blocks away does turn one off of random maps fast. Having a pre-made map could have limited that ocean size or even made a group of islands surround by an ocean that size a lot more fun. Only good thing that came from this map was that I discovered you can have just as much fun under the ocean waves as you can above them.

So if there's a reset, which I doubt but it's fun to chat about, the map will most like be a pre-made so all the areas that ImDeity is know for, will to available from opening day. Just a quick reply.

Just wondering, is anyone working on a map? Or is this idea dead?

    Hmm,

Just to be honest I've somewhat lost motivation in making a map as seen in my previous examples, but I am slowly trying to add more and more to the map due to the current size of it.

I don't really know if the map would be accepted, if it will then awesome, if not then I guess I'll post it on some website for people to download it, which will put be down if I have to but it's up to ImDeity to pick. I hope people can understand my lack of motivation though. I've also got real life issues so I only can work time to time.

But anyway, about a map, I had to scrap the former posts and I've created a 40k Diameter world, due to a mistake on my part about the size of the map.

But I have finished up working on the main land and and slowly adding custom biomes, which include icy mountains, marshy areas, custom plains, custom forests, tropics, arctic, custom deserts with oasis', and more which are secret.

I won't post any screenshots of what it looks like, since it takes my computer around an hour or so to generate the map to have it ready to upload to a picture sharing website.

But to answer to your question in short summary - I am working on a map, not sure if anyone else is also, and I'm slowly working on it due to lack of motivation and real life issues.

Okay, glad you're still working on it :) I have been doodling a bit, still trying to figure out how to use it. Don't know how you pick it up so easily.

Sounds great dude, thanks for replying.

Lets try to keep this thread going though. Im sure many people have forgotten about it. This will be a good reminder.

Like Qazz I'd like to see more terrain shifts such as mountain ranges, hidden valleys, and especially at least one ocean. We're on a decent map atm, but desert and snow biomes are too small and infrequent to really be noticeable on the current map, so I'd also like to see some larger deserts/snow biomes, maybe some snow mountains like was previously mentioned.

As far as Kingdoms go, I'd like to see some kingdom decay: towns that fall into ruin, aka debt, for long periods of time, face deletion at some time or another. Sure they may have some nice builds in them, but the town is either inactive, or heavily in debt, or both. There's no point in having the town up other than for someone to walk the streets and view the builds. Perhaps that's a reason for the towns to stay, but currently the server is littered with towns that fit either of those categories. If there was a way to regulate server clean-up of such towns, I'd be one to vote for it to be used. (Too bad there's not a way for town plots to "decay". It'd give it a griefed look to be sure, which is not the intention, but it would fit the ancient ruins look.)

Really love this idea, i always loathed the current map. We need big oceans for a variety of aquatic themed builds.

Even if we do not use a world map, i would at least like to see some different continents separated by oceans and have some smaller islands also.

If someone is willing to make maps for the 1.8 update then i see no reason why the community should not be able to vote for the prettiest map.

I am sure Deity would find that somewhat helpful and allow many members to feel like they are contributing to improving things.

    Much love

Problem is, anyone who submits a map needs to make sure they leave a space for the spawn, as Versh stated earlier that the spawn would carry over.

    Hai,

If anyone would also like to try to make a map, and would like the basics, or what I've been using here is some tips -

Of course, first download World-Painter if you haven't already if you're planning to make the map right here.

First, it's best to watch these tutorials which talk about the main basics of creating a map and I watched these to know most of it. But note, not all of this can be done on a largest scale easily, so when doing a map for the server, say a 40k Diameter which the most west side and most east side would be; -20,000 <-> 20,000.

Here is the link for the First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and the Eighth tutorials.

Most of those videos are at least 25-30+ minutes, and it's best to pay attention carefully when learning or at some case you may mess up while using World-Painter. But in my opinion, I've only watched the basics regarding land, trees, and rivers. Everything else I learned off Google or Trial and Error with my own ideas.

Also, it's best to watch those in order to actually make sense.

The map will take some bit of GB on your computer, so if you're planning to make a map with the diameter of 40k, you would need to add more memory dedicated to World-Painter right here.

    When making large amounts of land, it may or may not lag a lot regarding your computer specs. Where my computer isn't the strongest computer since I cannot even start up League of Legends with it, a good way I found out with a laggy computer to use World-Painter is to change your computer settings to have it run on best performance;

To do that, and this works for Windows 8+ so I am not sure if it works the same way regarding Windows 7, iMac, or other types of computer systems.

When on Windows 8+, go to your side search bar and type in Computer after that it will say This PC so you can right click that, and click Properties on the list that shows up. Then it will pop up your System Settings where on the left side bar it will show Device Manager, Remote Settings, System Protection, and Advanced System Settings.

    You will have to click the Advanced System Settings then another smaller pop up called System Properties will show up, after that you need to click Advanced button on the top bar, then click the first option which is Performance where it will say things under the tab Visual Effects like;

Let Windows choose what's best for your computer.
    Adjust for Best Appearance
    Adjust for Best Performance

The one I use for most games or programs since my computer isn't the best when it comes to those things is Adjust for Best Performance and click Apply whilst it may not look very well when it comes to words, as it looks more blocky words, it helps out in my view when it comes to performance.

Now these are things I use and do when it comes to World-Painter, I'm not really an expert on this since I only spent about 30 minutes watching half of the first and second episode, while everything else I did was Trial and Error. But if you want to make a map, and this hasn't helped for the basics, Google helps a lot when it comes to this stuff.

I really like the initiative and effort some people have put into this idea so I didn't want to post here initially but here goes..

While the idea of a custom map is nice, I'm not sure that it is realistic for a variety of reasons. Generating the overall outline of the terrain is not too difficult but adding the detail on such an area (minimum 12k X 12k, realistically we'd need a bit more in case there is a reason to expand by a few thousand blocks in any direction) will be very time consuming even if multiple skilled people were working on it. To fill such a map with all the required biomes and terrain features (rivers, cliffs, mountains, canyons and other things MC generates procedurally) alone would take a very long time. Assuming it takes an hour to fill a 1000 X 1000 block area (a very optimistic time) with sufficient detail, it would require at least 144 hours of work (assuming non-stop 6 hours of work a day, 7 days a week, this would be over 3 weeks of full time work).

The world painter approach is great for smaller maps like hunger games/mini-game type maps but at the scale of our main world, it would be a monumental task even if the technical challenges are met. This is why we used a terrain generator with customized config files to generate our main world ( http://dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/terrain-control/ ) and will most likely do so again for the next reset.

    Hai,

Honestly I am not really sure how to respond, but I do have to agree with you on all of your points regarding the making of the map, as I've chatted along with some other members on TeamSpeak3 or Skype regarding how such detail by myself will take possibly a month or more.

Even the basic terrain outline is proving to take a while due to the mass size of the map I've been making, as said in previous posts which was 40k Diameter due to talking to various members, they said in the past you've expanded the border, where World-Painter having the expand the border by thousands of blocks is quite difficult with a large map.

Although I haven't done much detail on the current map I'm working on, I constantly have to go back and forth between World-Painter and my SinglePlayer world to see if I messed up on anything, terrain is to messy, etc. Thus it adding another hour or more due to having to merge the Map to my Minecraft World, look around for mistakes, etc.

I'm also not sure if I should continue making the map, scrap it, or make it and post on some website. Whilst your words of "most likely do so again for the next reset." does give me hope for trying to continue the map, since there is still that 5% chance of happening.

Right now I'm not even sure if I answered properly or if I make sense, but I have to say that I really appreciate you posting here since I haven't expected you to respond really, no offence. But I'll support any of your decisions regarding the map either having a custom or the terrain generator. :)

Haha not sure how to reply to that.. :p I'm not going to write a big paragraph because what I was going to say is basically what Emotion said. The fact that you replied to this thread is awesome. If it was possible to get a map done within that timeline, and the map was nice and ImDeity Kingdoms material, would you consider using it for the map? I think that with the right people and good amount of team effort, anything is possible.
