In towns, we pay tax for land protection. Now when we have our animals protected, we should pay for their protection too.

So players should be taxed let's say 1 dei daily per 1 animal owned. If they dont have enough money, their horses get untamed, and their dogs and cats despawn.

I like the idea, but I think it should be expanded a bit.
First of all, we shouldn't include Ocelots and Wolves, as they are also a part of McMMO, which could muddle things up.

The average player with one horse should get taxed another however much a day. I think it should be higher, towards 10, maybe 15. You may say this is too much, especially for new players, but how many new players have a horse, before they start earning money.
And then once you gain more horses, for example a breeder, then the taxes would slowly get higher, introducing more of a money sink.

On the topic of this, we could introduce a requirement to vote before taming a horse. If you haven't voted in the last 24 hours, and use the tame command, it would send you the same message as it does for war (Unless that isn't a thing anymore).

But yeah, I like this idea, more money sinks and such are always good.

    Bad idea
    :(

Know what? if you think this is a good idea lets just take it a little further and say, all property needs to be taxed. Boxed normally and what's in the protected boxes as well. Why stop at pets? Oh I almost forgot, lets tax the builds too.

Believe it or not, taxes are crucial to the server. Without ways to reduce the amount of money in the economy, such as different taxes, it would not be a proper economy at all. If anything we need more money sinks in the server, more things for people to spend money on, poor or rich.

Getting taxed 10dei (Just a random number, I don't know what a good amount would be) a day for owning a horse or two is not going to make a difference if you vote every day. And if you have any other sources of income, like selling or doing labour services, then you'd never even notice.

I personally like the idea. The only reason I found to tax was if horses were of abundance and there were so many they filled the whole map but that doesn't seem to be the case as of now. I don't really see a reason to tax besides that but I do like the idea.

It's definitely a good idea. We've talked about it a bit when i put in all the horse changes a few weeks ago. As it sits now, it wont be implemented until we run into a case where people are abusing the situation that they're free. It will be added in the occurrence where tamed animals are causing a problem.

We've also decided that we shouldn't just stop at taxing the tamable pets in game. We'll also be taxing all birds. This is to future proof us for the possible case where they're added to the game in the future. Regrettably, this means that all minibirdes must pay additional taxes.

Your property is not protected unless being built on town plot or covered by precious stone. You pay donation for precious stones or tax for town plots. We do NOT pay for property or build, we pay for their protection. Being taxed for having animals protected is fair deal IMO.

I think it is a fair deal.

I think that more than taxing players and removing some money from the economy, this has to do with hoarders.

The same way people make storages with hundreds of chests to store unbelievable amounts of wheat seeds, some players are hoarding on pets, be them cats, dogs or horses, even more now that they are protected. I've seen players with over 20 horses, 'parked' at a stable, which were never used/ridden, and some more at his home for personal use. Taxing pets would keep some players from having them just for the sake of.
People have seem to forgot, after horses came up, that /main works under a limited number of mobs (due to players who used to hoard sheeps/cows/etc in farms, causing lag and dropping mob's spawning rate). I guess (maybe) the limit number was increased when server updated to 1.6.1, but still, horse hoarding is not much different from exaggerated mobs farm from the past.
Personally, I have 7 pets at the moment, only because I'm breeding mules, but I usually keep it to 4 or less, an amount I find very comfortable to live with, and I'd find worthy paying for. On an overview about paying I'd say, if you don't have much money, keep yourself a low number of pets; if you have money but don't want to spend too much, maybe you should reconsider if all the pets you have are worth keeping; And if you sell them, you'd have to refine your stock and only keep horses someone would buy (and quick).

Maybe I'm biased, for I can't see horses as cute pets xD I only keep the ones with best stats to participate in events now and then, but, even if this is not approved, think about the pets you have, do you really need that all?

I think it is a bad idea - taxing just for the sake of taxing?
Why would you punish someone who wants to collect the different types/colors of horses or keep other players from even having one? Some towns give new players horses as an incentive to join them and taxing the animals would then put another tax burden on the new player on top of the town tax they must pay.

And then to top it off forcing a de-spawn on the animals that someone has paid for or looked for a long time would just cause angry/frustrated players.
When a player doesn't pay their plot taxes their building doesn't disappear or when a town doesn't pay it's taxes that day it does not disappear - so why should their animals do so?

Voting is voluntary and should remain so - if it is made mandatory to do so before enjoying this server then players that cannot vote due to the IP restrictions on those sites (same IP as another player) will be punished.

And yes I need all of my pets :p.

Some players have a tendency to go a bit overboard and end up with a ridiculous amount of pets. Read Driver's statement for reasons why this affects more than just that particular player.

If implemented, the tax would be a small amount per animal. The idea here is that it would be a negligible amount of tax for any player who isn't abusing the system. If the player has 100 pets then, yes, it will cost them quite a lot to maintain them. If they have so many that they can no longer pay for them then the pets get despawned so that others get a chance to own them(via reincarnation). This is actually quite similar to real life. Poor people can't afford to feed 30 dogs or 10 horses without making sacrifices.. These luxuries are only available to those that can afford it. As for voting, it's still completely optional. You could go mining for 30 minutes and likely get enough sellable material to lodge your pets for a month.

The idea here isn't to punish players for having a few pets. Rather, it's to hinder people that abuse the system. An example of this would be someone who breeds 30 horses just to fill up their barn. Another would be someone that tames every horse they see in the wild even if they dont need it. Another might be someone that rides a new horse everywhere they go and just leaves the old one out in the wild. There used to be a self-balancing system where people would just kill or claim these random tamed horses out in the wild. Now that horses are protected, their numbers will not remain balanced. Abandoned horses and those owned by inactive players will remain there forever. Having a tax will help to return some of the population balance and encourage players to be responsible for the animals they claim.

Also, even though i'm in favor of the idea, it's not something that will be implemented at the moment. However, some type of horse despawn system will have to be implemented at some point in effort to clear out some of the stale/abandoned horses out there.

Seems to me its more a pet control issue. I personally have several "pet" horses. I had originally started keeping many for my town folks but unfortunately, many have not logged back on. In the process, I have learned very well how to get what I want when breeding. And, since the new release command I have been systematically releasing many on my own. I have also offered free horses in the capitol as incentives for people to look around or whatever. These are high quality horses and I believe many people could enjoy a faster horse than they may find in the wild. There are currently 3 in the capitol. People just need to ask and I will release these to allow a retaming or a transfer of title, another awesome part of btarbs handiwork.

As I said, I am reducing the numbers of horses I have. I appreciate the fact that they affect the server. I have tried to ask about this but was ignored. As you all are revealing that this is such a large issue, you will be relieved I will no longer be keeping so many horses. If any of you has taken a moment to look you would see I have already dramatically reduced my horse numbers. My barns are mostly empty. So if someone wants to buy one, better come, I'm releasing till I feel I have a rideable lot. Which will not be many, but will allow variety of speeds as lag does affect the fast rides and loosing them is not something I'd like. And I'll continue to offer horses for those who are able and willing to pay for the breeding, tax, or no tax, as long as Imdeity allows us these lovely priveleges. They are great fun.

Also, the idea of taxing to reduce horses just standing around due to inactive members is probably for the best. I have seen the effects of releasing horses; yes, they do respawn, better, faster, stronger!

P.S. There are two issues that would need to be resolved before this could really be fairly implemented. I have sold many horses. Not everyone has come back to me to get the horses put into their names. Also, the /horse assign really needs to have an accept command please.

Yea, it would be more about pet control than money. Money, however, is an excellent motivator, lol. You certainly don't need to get rid of all of your horses, but i appreciate the responsible thinking :)

I knew i'd have to implement some way for you to get a list of your horses so you could find/release/transfer ones that were given away or abandoned.. but it never occurred to me that people could use the assign command to troll people with horses. Thanks for thinking of that, mini :)

I eagerly welcome suggestions and people pointing out flaws in my code, so never be shy to let us know if you think of an idea to make things better.

Flaws? Never flaws, only bits in progress. :)

I have spent quite a load of dei raising horses so it must be a good thing right? I may try now and then again, for the fastest horse ever. ;)

Some owners may be tempted to kill their horses if this happened. :(

As a mayor of a town i keep several horses that i give to new residents. I really don't think a horse tax would be a bad thing provided you had some way of locating a horse or releasing a particular horse without knowing where it is. I have trained and given many horses away and would have no way of locating them to release them or properly transfer ownership. A simple /horse list that barfed out the cords of your trained horses. Also possibly listing a unique id number so you could /horse release [ID]

So basicly, making owning 1 horse just to run around affordable, but if you want to start breeding, you need to sell a lot of them instead of hoarding them in your basement.

I would like to add horses are very expensive already. The cost of saddles and leads far outweigh the cost of the horse. This in itself greatly increases the cost of single horse ownership. By dropping the price of the equestrian items and keeping a flat per horse tax that would accomplish the same goal of lowering single horse ownership.

looking at a 60 example of 2/day for the 1st and 5/day for extra horses and saddle and leads at 800
    1 horse = 812
    5 horses = 2312

now the same 60 days 6/day for all horses but the saddle and leads at 350
    1 horse = 710
    5 horses = 2510

It would be a much simpler model.

Why would you ever need more than 1 saddle? And I don't think you don't need a lead at all.

In my opinion, I don't think there should be much comparison of item cost vs pet taxes. They both serve completely separate a purpose. Taxes aren't about cost of ownership, they're about limiting abuse caused by extreme over consumption by an individual and elimination of pets owned by inactive players. ... and as far as i know they aren't planned for implementation in the foreseeable future.

Exactly my point You only need 1 saddle. making it more expensive for the first horse. All the numbers I was estimating were based on the owner only owning 1 saddle and one lead ( i just went to /go shop and see the prices have come down since i purchased mine. should be 650 now). In my second example there would be no need to have a scale based on how many you have just higher flat $/horse. This would discourage hoarding and release inactive players horses quicker. While still allowing a new player to enjoy one without a large up front cost for accessories. We do want to let new players come back and something as simple as having a horse is a small part of feeling established on the server.

There is passably a different way that all this could be accomplished without tax. if there was a way to see when the pet was last interacted with. So care for it, or it will become wild again.

Or if you just want to have of way of releasing the inactive player's horses then maybe a way could be found to determine the # of days a player has been inactive and then at a set point a message is sent to them informing them that any pets they own are in danger of being de-spawned. After that date is met and the player still has not been on-line then all their pets are de-spawned.

This would greatly help with town plot management. I currently have several inactive players that I want to release their plots back to the town but they have pets on them.
Sure I could just push the pets out the door but thenI have inactive pets siting in the streets or wandering around town.
