I've asked this before and got a snippy shut-up like remark.
Not sure if there is a forum for this or not if there is sorry.
I'm a craftsmen and I'm wondering what is a "Great Construction" for upgrading your class?

A great construction is something beyond simply a house. It will likely take weeks to build and consume thousands upon thousands of blocks. It will also likely require a lot of planning and be seriously complex. People will look at it and be unable to help themselves from saying "wow, how long did that take?!"

Classes are being reworked so Great Constructions aren't going to be part of the requirements for upgrading Craftsman levels once the update is ready.

The specifics on the requirements for promo will be put into the wiki ( I planned on already having them there but have been lazy typing them up for it ). Right now I will say that the craftsman upgrades will depend on your rank in creative rather than great constructions.

This doesn't seem to make much sense... Completely different server, and should have different ranks. What about PvP? Then shouldn't the person with the most money get the next upgrade in Merchant? IMO, each server should be separate (except for /mine obviously).

Actually, what you said makes no sense... of course there is a relation between merchants and the pvp server.

Craftsman rank upgrades were originally set to be judged by their 'Great Constructions' that they built on the main server. Well, that didn't really work well and doesn't work well with how we want classes to work. Hence the creative server and plugin being developed.

The reason the creative server was made was for the craftsman class rank upgrades. People being able to free build in their own personal areas is a happy side effect.

Great Constructions were going to be judged by the persons skill and creativity as a builder to determine whether they were worthy of the next rank. Guess what, that's exactly how it's going to work with the creative ranks.

As long as a player builds something that looks good, uses the size and space of the plot well and doesn't go against any of the build restrictions they can easily get to a Rank 2 plot. Rank 2 -> Rank 3 starts getting a little harder and people need to begin adding more details and variety to their builds. For rank 3+ we start getting stricter with what gets you promoted. So to get to the higher ranks in creative corresponds with getting into the higher ranks in craftsman. It requires building skill, attention to detail and creativity like it did before, but now it's open to more players that want to do it because they don't have to rely on what materials they can gather and/or buy.

So it is your intentions, to take away the astonishing builds from main, that fuel the economy with all the supplies demanded, and put them on creative? Where it takes no work to get the materials? It's called main for a reason, and a towny server for a reason. Put the good builds on that, it's not a creative server. Or a PvP server, sure they can be fun side notes, but don't make that the focus.

Guess you'll have to convince Deity it should be that way then. It was his decision for it to be this way.

Unless there is a way to prove that a craftsman gathered every block in her construction and placed every block herself, there is no fair way to judge these on the main world. Logblock logs don't stay around for long, so if if takes you a couple of weeks to build, we can't prove you built the whole thing.

Also, not much could stop someone from keeping their eye on an old great build and call it their own.

Creative world plots is really the only way to do it. And why does it really matter if a craftsman had to gather the materials? They can be bought from the mall as well, that's not really working for them either.

I do agree with part of what you said with proving who built it, but I'm not saying they have to gather the blocks, but it is more buying/selling stimulation in the economy, which is a pretty good thing. And it makes the build more interesting if its built in survival. However, that's my opinion. Wouldn't it be possible for plots to be specially claimed? For Great Constructions, although, I would admit that's a ton of work considering that the creative world was just made for this.

From what I see here, I agree with both sides of this discussion, but I have some view that I would like to share as well~

I don't particularly like using the creative server ranks for Craftsman upgrades. Here's a tiny snippet from the wiki on the Classes and Ranking System-from the Craftsman article,
What I see from that article is that the class isn't solely for the purpose of building great/magnificent/majestic builds. Part of it is also doing the "labor" part of the job, such as collecting the resources needed to build it. I see how you can argue that the player may just buy those resources, but keep in mind that the dei/money used to buy those materials also require work or "labor" for the player. (Sure, they might have donated, but that's...irl $$$...can't count that) [Some things, the /mall just doesn't have enough of. I had to collect some double chests of BROWN wool, which was before the update where farm-able cocoa beans came in)

Next issue, is if the specified player has actually built that certain construction. We don't want anyone taking the full credit if someone else helped with it, or else it wouldn't be fair for other players. There really isn't any way to prevent this (smc has a point), and the creative world would be a nice place to enforce that. However, as with that last map, players who built those "Great Constructions" built on a honor system. By the time you had enough (expensive) resources (which used to be a ton to impress those judges), an amazing idea of what to do, you're pretty much that mature player, one that would stick to that honor system. Back in the days when I was building my great construction, I remember hogging the build to myself so all the glory and credit would go to me. On the contrary, I remember having Qazz help out on placing the carpet...

Great massive constructions on main? That takes a lot of work, perseverance, determination, but the end product makes everyone happy. (hopefully) If it's in a certain town, it attracts residents to the town just to catch a glimpse of a wonder. It brightens up the community, inspires others to build, and who knows, it might cause a new player to decide to stay on this server, who may one day become a veteran.

Just to end this off, no matter if Deity's decision is changed, or not, building has always played an important role in Minecraft, so let's not let it go to waste.

Like Aqua, I agree with both sides, but personally I think a great construction would have more value to the creator and his/her peers if it was built in survival, because it takes that much more determination and effort to pull through.

Last I knew the craftsman were not required to build the thing by themselves.
And as for keeping someone from keeping an eye on an old great build and calling it their own all great builds had to be submitting under the great constructions forum therefore all it would take to remove this possibility of "plagiarism" would be a quick reference of all the submitted great builds. Which if they were placed into a gallery based on the type of build (e.g. castle, town, skyscraper, etc.) and maybe main building material as a sub-category of the type of build wouldn't take very long.
Say a 20 floor hotel/casino is submitted main material stone brick, open folder great builds->skyscrapers->stonebrick->empty no chance of "plagiarism", but next time someone submits something similar the folder isn't empty and it is either the same build or it is not.
All it would take would be a little organization and maybe 1-5 more minutes per build depending on how full the folder is, and since there is only 70 great construction submissions in the 1 and a half years (since the first great submission on page 4) I don't think that this would really be that hard of an idea to implement but I don't really like creative mode i might use it to make sure I understand concepts like different redstone ideas but I really prefer not to play in creative. But that should not mean that my ability to better myself on the main server is stunted while the merchants and nobility who may dislike creative less than me can advance through all of their ranks without setting foot on creative. Similar to what was mentioned above if nobility don't have to be in a certain rank on the war list for the week, and merchants don't have to have so much money on the pvp server why should craftsman have to be a certain rank on the creative server? I understand that people wanted the creative world and I'm not saying it should go away I'm just saying that the pvp server is it's own thing I can't send my enchanted diamond tools and armor over there so why do I have to build on the creative server to further my rank on the main survival server?

So again, how do we know who built it for the rank upgrade? How do we know the craftsman put much work into it? Say it's 2 craftsmen working together and one is really good and the other is just filling in windows and empty wall frames that the good builder laid out. How would it be fair to promote them both?

There are builds on the server that people just built and didn't submit as great constructions that anyone could claim if they knew no one had been there or the owner had left the server.

But merchants and nobility can build great things and not advance through their ranks for doing so. So I'm not quite seeing your point. What, exactly, to you is different about building in creative as opposed to building in survival mode? I'm curious what makes them that different to you that you can't build in creative.

The ranks weren't designed to box anyone into anything. Anyone can sell things to other players. Anyone can be an assistant in a town. Anyone can build things. It's when you specialize that those things change. And fulfilling the final pieces to rank up is not exactly easy for any of the classes. Many merchants haven't even owned a shop, much less sold 6000 dei worth of items through their shop. Many nobility haven't added 10 members to the towns they're in or haven't added any at all. And not many craftsman have achieved the rank needed. None of those things are particularly easy.

On phone so specific quoting is hard

To the problem with two craftsmen both wanting an upgrade either say only one upgrade per build or have both applicants in a pm say how much each did

Yes merchants and nobility don't advance through builds but neither do I advance through selling quartz or adding people to towns.

And the difference between survival and creative is the difference between earning a million dollars and having someone walk up and hand you a million dollars. Getting handed a million dollars feels pretty good but knowing that your actions directly earned you a million dollars instead of being in the right place at the right time feels so much better.

And I'm not saying anything is easy or should be what I'm saying in fact is that making creative required for craftsman is making it too easy and is illogical
