Economy - is it broken? vol. I (philosophy= no suggestion=thoughts.)

    No, this time it is not about suggestions. This time it is about disappointment.

    In May/June we were on top of Minestatus. Since then we are slowly descending. This is not caused by people going on vacations - other servers must have same inactivity issues. On diamond voting sites, we are even further from being top. Why?

    New Spawn. We made great but dead spawn. There is no info for people, no guide. If we want to keep new people online for more than few minutes until they turn from being impressed to being bored, we need to give them quickly some ingame info how to play here, not just rules. (is it included in new starter quest? i would like to see it, can there be some lift from ground for us who did starter quest already?) Then Quests and shops but its another story.

    Update to 1.3. Broken world teleports, broken chat. LAG. This is more serious than large empty spawn because it affects regular players. How long can one get over rollbacks after server restarts? How long can one get over chests not opening? Lets blame Jeb_ but there are some strange things:
    - i am sponsor, i can use /fly. As spawn build team member, i had advantage of full-speed flying. First day when we were on 1.3 i was still able to use full speed flying without any lag problem (i was throwing books with quills on people from air so it really wasnt 1.2.5). Second day i lagged out of /fly every 15 or 30 blocks and fell to death. Third day VanZeben set new flying speeds for donators, i was unable to use full speed flying anymore and slower flying had positive effect on distance, i was able to fly over 100 blocks without lagging. But still, lag falls occured. Now question - why i was able to fly well first day on 1.3 and second day flying was broken?
    - after 1.3 update average framerate for my pc dropped from say 20 fps to 15 fps in normal places (town, wilderness) and from 15 fps to 10 fps in extreme locations (capital castle towers) . So i would blame tall chunks and some performance issues of 1.3 update. But in mining world framerate is like 7 fps even over flat ocean, with flying impossible (falling every second or two) and even dragging item in inventory is slow and jerky. I have no idea why main world works acceptable and mining world doesnt? (and dont blame MCMMO, this happens even when i am the sole one in mining world).

    Trade. How many donors and merchants do we have on server? And how many auctions do we see on DeityAuction list? You lazy people, why dont you offer one single stack of whatever crap each day just to make trade running? The more auctions, the more people attracted. The more people attracted, the more chances someone will bid good money on your goods.

    Taxes. In newsflash #1 we were told our money will be taxed by 0,7% per day. I appreciate that admins delayed tax introduction, hopefully until update issues are fixed.

    Competition. There are other servers with same approach as ImDeity (I tried one today and noticed that they run towns on some plugin named Kingdoms 2.0 - coincidence or are they stealing from us?). There are other sites with different approach then ImDeity. Tekkit servers, Hunger game servers, other game servers. Are we going to fight all of them or to specialize on something which we are good in? (btw, did you know you get diamond for voting on sites regardless if you type right captcha? only Minestatus is careful about this)

    Development. I heard some words from VanZeben today about new ideas for more RPG oriented gameplay, which may lead to big change for us all. Basic idea was that our "classic" world with towns is no longer attractive for masses so we will introduce some more competitive rules. That makes me sad because i joined and stayed here right because of this "classic" town idea with no need for RPG. So, is idea about more RPG gameplay based on player demand or admin decision? And is this already being worked on, or are admins rather working on already announced/promised features?

    Community. I doubt if i would stay here so long and spend 2000 hours online if there wasnt such good people here. And i hope this community will keep together as long as possible. Not necessarily including me, but its another story.

    But don't call people lazy **** might want to edit that out... ( even though I agree)
    Don't hate me for the following:
    The spawn spawn flopped.
    It was awsome and everything for the first few days but then everything got discovered.
    There was no support for after the spawn apart from mistakes in the spawn.
    it needed the extra boost like a guide to the new spawn or hints hidden around but instead the occasional sign saying imdeity or an enchantment table.
    I personally think it was released to early and extra things should of been added before the release. I'm not saying I can provide all the answers but I feel like something is missing.
    Don't get me wrong the build team done an awsome job but it was more the support after it was released that disappointed me.
    Don't hate on this I mean it totally as constructive criticism :)
    ATM the server doesn't have a re-play feature, what I mean is after awhile everything becomes, been there done.
    Maybe having events more often or a daily pop fight that lasts 30mims but gives people something to look forward to.
    Let's face it,the server used to be way way more popular, some blame it on the reset or the summer holidays but we know it isn't just that.
    I think some old things need to be added back from a year ago when roses were red.
    I hope people see that I mean the best by what I've said and hope it is used as help not hate.

    I agree with everything that has been said here. I really see it all as constructive criticism, and I would like also to see this server to continue to grow and dominate. Our town Caldera is very active and I just wanted to share a little about what we have been doing. We have been trying to get everyone involved that joins our town and give them jobs so that they start making dei right away and feel/be useful. I know this may seem like a small thing, but it really helps build our community and helps keep our community active and involved. We try to set as few limits as possible (except the exclusion of cobble and dirt houses is a priority) so that our residents can express themselves and make themselves feel at home.
    With everything that has been said in this forum thread so far, I think what we miss most is our town chat, which I saw in chat that ImDeity is working on. I think also that people have figured out that you can get diamonds for just putting your name in the slot and hitting the button, maybe setting a delay would help this. I still to the captcha because I want other people to know this server rules.

    I havent seen any lag from 1.3 personally. Maybe check your computer? My computer is a laptop and isn't exactly top of the line either. From what I have experienced fps issues are usually caused by my computer, while block lag is server lag (could be wrong about this though).

    1.3 messed up the fps in the generation code so whenever you move more than 50-100 blocks u MAY get large lag.
    Meh, blame Jeb.
    That's what I heard from a mc forum.

    ... Your title is pretty misleading. I see almost nothing about the economy in your post, save for a blurb about taxes and a bit on trading. Also, none of it has to do with philosophy, but rather personal opinion and observation on the server. Therefore, I clicked on your post expecting something completely different. May I edit it for you? Perhaps "Some Opinions on the Server Direction" or something?

    Yes, so much weighed on New Spawn, but in reality it did nothing.

    I hate to be like this but we really need to bring back some of the pre reset features. Features such as the in game auctions (http://imdeity.com/threads/the-quick-in-game-auctions.12872/#post-154229), malls, and non craftsman building permission ticket thingy.

    The in game auctions made the chat and trade a lot more active and fun. The malls were great, you could buy what you needed when you wanted it, at competitive prices. And the temporary building code meant that I didn't have to walk a craftsman all the way to my house, give him perms and then pay him to place water.

    These features, coupled with other and new ones would make the server more enjoyable. At the moment it is dead. Realistically there is nothing to do. Most people have enough money and items that they don't need to work. The community is even crumbling slightly.

    Moi, 'Economy - is it broken?' is a series of posts by Barry, all of similar direction. So rather than change the title depending on the information presented in each one, he has kept it the same so people know what to expect.

    Thank you, Bilko. While that does explain some things, I still would like to recommend that he at least append the title to give some idea of what to expect here, as it really has no relation to the content of the post. I consider myself well versed and active within this forum, yet I knew nothing about said series of posts, and can only assume others would be the same. If I open a book expecting it to be about turtles because the cover said "The World of Turtles" and it ends up having little to do with turtles save for half a chapter about turtle habitat, then I am probably not going to be interested in or continue reading that book, much less want to discuss it. I simply thought it could be helpful if the title clearly reflected what Barry has to say so that more users would know what they will read here or would recognise it as something they wish to discuss. This has nothing to do with forum rules, and that's why I'm asking as opposed to anything else ... He does not have to change it, it was merely a suggestion.

    I had to edit part of your post, as the language used was inappropriate for our forums. However, if you wish the title to be changed, it can be done. Any ideas on a new title? Although, I don't really see a need to change it.

    The Tekkit craze + all the kids returning to school are the major reasons for the low participation. I'm guilty myself.. I've been playing Tekkit a lot.

    But for sure fixing the issues 1.3 introduced as well as repopulating spawn with quest NPC's / player shops / informational signs will help a lot.

    I know it sounds repetitive, but all this is seriously being worked on and we need to be patient.

    For sure we will be on top again, just watch. As far as the competition copying some of the things we do, I find it flattering. It means were doing something right.

    For lag/low FPS issues, I would recommend uninstalling all java-6 related installs and updates, and then install the newest Java 7. If you still have lag, it is probably due to 1.3 demanding more CPU/memory than previous versions. It could also be a memory leak which will be fixed in a future patch, but I'm not sure. I get no lag at all with 1.3 on an i7 with 16gb ram.

    EDIT: If you want to see some real lag and like .001 FPS walk onto a corrupted chunk on a tekkit server :D Tekkit is really hard to manage on SMP so you will see a lot of these servers die off in the near future and people migrate back to classic. The tekkit mods are way too demanding on the server resources and it doesn't really support a huge community like Deity unless a ton of features are disabled.

    Information providing is being worked on. We're reliant on alot of plugins for the quests, which haven't always updated yet.

    1.3:
    Probably flying around /spawn, it disables there sometimes. Can't blame the server for YOUR technical issues tough, my FPS hasn't changed that much.

    Trade:
    1.3 update, server activity low... Herping derp. Within a week or so the situation will turn out better.

    Taxes:
    iConomy plugin..... again. Unsure if that one is fully updated yet.

    Competition:
    We outshine most servers that focus on one thing and we bring a whole scala of possibilities. I would love to see my idea of the RPG world added in some way, or just an RPG world. The voting thingy is known, we can't fix that, the sites don't send a confirmation to the server. It works the same way on other servers and if idiots just want their diamonds and don't care about the vote, then it will happen the same way all over the world.

    Development:
    More RPG gameplay is being developed, like quests, scavenger hunts etc. We're not going to compete all servers, we're more versatile and multi-focused then most servers. We outcompete servers who focus on one sole thing. We're currently working with 2 actual devs and a few people that have the potency to help in this process.

    Community:
    I have a feeling we're losing lots of old-timers, however many new ones enter the deity domain aswell.

    You have many good points, but I have to ask, what does most of this have to do with the economy? Probably should have been titled something else.

    There are not many merchants left, most of them changed their classes because they had lost all commands for a longer period of time
    - Ability to sell 20% more than normal limit to /shop- /shop command dissabled
    - Ability to open a 5×5 Shop at /go mall- mall closed
    - Ability to do 3 Auctions every 24 hours- auctions were added again recently 1 per day


    And I am sure the number of merchants will not regenerate for some time

    There is one vague link connecting all my random thoughts to server economy: The more people playing, the better economy running. Mojang derped with 1.3 and he should avoid repeating it or people will move from Minecraft to other games. I happily spent 30 dollars on game and 200 dollars on sponsorship, but i am not happy about having to spend 1000 dollars on new PC if my old one will be unable to run future updates of Minecraft (again, self-focused).
    8 months after world (re)started, regular ImDeity players who keep community together are well established in towns, they dont have to sell stuff in need for some dei. Also, they remember prices that used to be here long time ago and they try hard to keep them the same "usual prices". So we need some enthusiast newbies (not affected by past) to come and play. If they come and they are not welcomed, they leave.

    I cannot edit title of thread, so can someone please set it as "Barry's thoughts vol.I" ?

    1.3:
    No. I avoid flying close to capital border. And i dont complain about low performance, im saying that performance in lowered unevenly and im curious why.
    Competition:
    Voting issue understood. More worlds = sparse spread community. RPG could be used well in PvP world, i have concerns about RPG aspects in main world which i still see in traditional "freebuild" way. However i miss answer if this development of RPG ideas has priority over populating new spawn or not.

    PC performance - i learned that if Mojang states "Performance improvement" it means they expect my computer has some performance improvement. Im going to wipe out HDD and do clean install, so you will not hear much from me for few days.
    Patience - i have some, i just need to fill the paper sometimes.
    Tekkit - redstone circuits are frowned upon already so I dont expect tekkit on ImDeity. Its too much (big computing power needed) for too little (entertainment for few technology-focused players). So we will lose some players who will join tekkit servers, and we can focus on keeping family-friendly status.

    Sorry if i sound rude but tekkit is not the reason we are losing players. Yes tekkit is fun but after a few hours unless you are reallt dedicated you will stop. it takes to much effort after a certain point that you will stop unless you are like me and wanna see everything there is to offer. To be honest the server is the problem. We have been waiting for months now for features that are basic features tht even the smallest of servers have.Its no one's fault though. But let me give you a example. i know thi has been discussed but ts the truth. We cann't stop running from the truth or the server will collapse.

    Examples of basic plugins: mcmmo. Almost all servers have this. But not us? It doesnt cause that much lag and the benefits out ways the lag. If you aren't gona include it for awhile i suggest taking it of your description on minestatus.

    Player shops: Again another plugin that was promised but not delievered. Shouldn't be that hard to add back.

    Kingdoms 2.0: this has made me the madest. Other servers are already using kingdoms 2.0 the full version and we are still in testing? Really? we developed it we should have it first.

    Tier 2 and 3 classes. i dont have much to say on this. We have been promised these for almost a year now. Please add them.

    mhm is hard like to stick with merchant class, but i enjoy trade so it suits me fine, and hopefully when anvil gets its shops set up we can do trade with other towns to encourage trade, this may be small but it may encourage other towns to make shops of their own.

    mcMMO: This plugin does nothing but cause lag. In order for it to cause little to no lag, it would need an unbelievable amount of patch work. The reason small servers have it is because of this:
    When you break a block, mcMMO reads the type, checks your amount in the skill (if enabled), then calculates a chance of a special block dropping as well as adding to your skill. Do this for every block broken by 200 players on at one time; You'll wind up with a ton of lag. Do this with 1-10 players, it'll work fine.

    Player shops: The plugin needs to be rewritten to our server's coding API, as far as I know. Once this is done, some work had to be done to allow players access to their shop plots.

    Kingdoms: As far as I know, Kingdoms is ready to go. But, the implementation is the issue. Migrating all the town info isn't an issue, but migrating the plots (currently protected with WorldGuard) to the new plot protection plugin, DeityProtect, is the difficult part. The new features, such as towns having to be a certain distance apart, is going to be hard to sort out also.

    Right now the priority is to fix the broken plugins from the update. Then work on new stuff, like the latter.

    On mcmmo why do larger servers then us use it then? They must have something that we don't know about...

    Player shops: We have had 6 months to work on thse. Yes it takes a ton of effort to code but cann't we just overwrite the current one every other server is using? And what does the server API have to do with player shops.They are pretty much the same as the admin shop.And that came out fairly fast.
