    Hi all,

Feed the Beast is a collection of mods which add blocks & dynamics that enhance Minecraft in a multitude of ways. The learning curve is steep but well worth it.

With the popularity & interest that our FTB server has gained, I aim on constructing a more easy source of info for people getting started on it than Google/Youtube/FTBWiki. I will attempt to put useful screenshots etc & hopefully I can do it justice. I would greatly appreciate & welcome any other contributions or suggestions for improvement.

I would assume you have read the ImDeity FTB: How To Join Guide thread & have been able to connect.

Getting Started - Your First Night

You have three priorities at the start. They are Food, Shelter, Resources. Food will always be your top priority.

You cannot break any blocks near the spawn, so you need to pick a direction & venture off. Avoid jumping or running as they both deplete your Hunger Bar faster, & once that runs out, you die, regardless of how many Hearts you have.

I would suggest trying to break any bushes, grass or plants you see as they can drop food & that is your most precious resource. Also try to gather some Wood, & if you see Gravel, that as well. Once you have found a nice spot, hopefully near some trees and water, you will need to either dig yourself a shelter or build one.

PRO TIP - If you see Sheep, kill them for Wool and Mutton. If you see Cotton, collect it. Making a bed & sleeping in it is a great idea as it sets your spawn point!

Tool Building - Set Yourself Apart From The Animals

Unfortunately, you cannot just make yourself some tools out of wood like normal Minecraft, other than a shovel. The first tier of tools is Flint/Bone, but before you can do that, you will need to make yourself five things, if you've gathered sufficient wood.

Blank Pattern - Used to make Patterns in the Stencil Table & craft the other four items below.
Stencil Table - Used with a Blank Pattern to craft patterns for tools & weapons.
Pattern Chest - Used to hold all your Patterns. If you place it next to a Part Builder, you won't need to hold your patterns in your inventory to build parts.
Part Builder - Used to make the individual parts for tools.
Tool Station (Can be upgraded later to a Tool Forge) - This is where you assemble the parts into tools.

PRO TIP - You can name your tools in the Tool Station before you finish crafting them!

Luckily for you, there is this handy thing called the NEI which allows you to look up the recipe for things. If you do not have it up, open your inventory and press O. Down the bottom, in the middle, there will be a little bar to type key words into for things you're looking for. There will be pages of things on the right hand side & you can scroll through them.

If you put your Cursor over an item & press U, it will show all the things that item is used to make. If you do the same thing, but press R, it will show what is used to make that item.

Smeltery - From the Flint Age to the Copper Age

The first two metals you're going to come across are Copper & Aluminum.

    (More to Come)

    Many thanks,
    Seph

I like this allready :3, Here's my tip

Thaumcraft tip... If you are working with the matrix (the thaumcraft advanced crafting table) You wanna keep as much simmetry, the pedestals and the area around the matrix,
it helps with the stability of the whole thing and will stop creation of flux in your area, another thing, put candles and skulls around it, also helps with it, hope it helped ;)

You should add how to make a smeltery as soon as possible.

Mystcraft Worlds - Creating another Age!

This is a simple guide to creating your own age.
The bare minimum you need for starting is a Book Binder, an Ink Mixer, some leather, ink, and paper. A Writing Desk makes it easy to organize once you get into it; and allows for renaming Books once they are made. But it is not essential to start.

To begin, you need to make a couple of Linking Pages. This is simple enough as putting ink and paper in the Ink Mixer and pulling out the Linking Pages.

With your first Linking Page, make a Linking Book. This is your return path home! Combine a Linking Page with a piece of leather. You will get a grey book. With the book in your hand, Right Click the spot where you want this book to bring you to. This will be where you port too later on. The book should turn Green. Now you have a Linking Book, put it in your inventory for later.

Next to make an Age! Using the Book Binder, combine a piece of leather (goes in upper left square) and your pages. Pages need to be in a specific order or you Age may be unstable. Follow the guide here:

    Linking Page
Biome Page (Number of Biomes depends upon Biome Modifier Page, see FTBwiki for further guidance.)
Biome Modifier Page (Single Biome, Huge Biomes, etc.)
Terrain Generator Page (Standard World, Flat World, etc.)
(Sun) Position Page (Rising Phase, Zenith Phase, etc.)
(Sun) Length Page (Double, Normal, Half, Zero, etc.)(This multiplies the time it takes for 1 day to pass)
    Sun Page (Normal, Dark, etc.)
(Moon) Position Page (Rising Phase, Zenith Phase, etc.)
(Moon) Length Page (Double, Normal, Half, Zero, etc.)(This multiplies the time it takes for 1 day to pass)
    Moon Page (Normal, Dark, etc.)
Star Type (Bright, Dark, Twinkling, etc.)
Weather Page (No Weather, Eternal Storms, etc.)
Lighting Page (Bright, Normal, Dark, etc.)

And that's it. Put these in, in this order and you will have a very good chance of making a stable age.

If you want to play around you can add in a few other items. World Modifiers can be added at the end of the list. Things such as Floating Islands, Purple Color Page with a Water Color Page, etc.

And then there is the all important Clear Modifiers Page. It should be the last page you add. It is not necessary; but without it, random additions can be picked when the Age is created. (As should be obvious, putting the Clear Modifiers Page in front of other pages, negates the pages after.)
Once you have them in the order you want, name your Age (or leave it with the sequential number) and pull out your Descriptive Book! (Please finish reading Mystcraft Worlds - Entering another Age! before entering your Age.)

If you do not have all (or any) of the pages listed above, you can still make an Age with just a Linking Page. The program will randomly select for any missing item. And if you do not use a Clear Modifiers Page at the end, the program may (and usually does) insert random things.

Most of what makes an Age Stable is already listed on the FTBwiki. There are some standards that need to be meet in order to make an Age that will not fall into decay or have other random, negative effects. Things that contradict are a huge factor. Certain other items play into it. Too many Biomes, too many additions, etc. Adding Dense Ores Page to an Age will always make it unstable. And adding Spontaneous Explosions will add.... Spontaneous Explosions.

If you see signs that the Age is unstable (decay, spontaneous explosions, shifting earth, your skin catching fire, etc.) It is recommended you leave immediately. See the next entry (Mystcraft Worlds - Entering another Age!)

Mystcraft Worlds - Entering another Age!

Ok, some things to have before entering your first Age.

    Armor (always a good idea).
    Weapon(s) .
    Food.
    Torches or other light source.
A stack of Glass. (You'll see why below.)
    A Workbench.
    A lectern or book stand.
    Some wood.
    Your Linking Book!

Now you are ready for your first scouting trip.

First pick a safe place to leave from (I suggest the same room you Linked your Linking Book to.)

Place your Descriptive Book on a lectern or book stand. You can click it from your hand, but when you do it will fall to the ground and be damaged. Enough damage can destroy a book. To pick a Descriptive Book or Linking Book back up, Shift-Click it with an empty hand.

PRO TIP - There is no way to repair a Descriptive Book. You can make Linking Books and link them in the Age the Descriptive Book leads too. This will give you a new book to use in case your original one is destroyed.

Minibirde's PRO TIP - You can make a new book. When you are in a location suitable, Shift-Click and remove the book from the placement location. Take it to your desk, insert it into the next available spot on the left side where pages and books go. Make sure there is a lot of paper and ink in the desk. Proceed to copy each page excluding blank pages or linking pages. (Hold your curser over the displayed page and right click, new page is now in the little box to the lower left.) This is also a good time to make spares.

Now, click the Descriptive Book and then click the picture box on the right page. The first time you go through, this will be a black box.
When you port into the new age, be ready. You should appear on a 5x5 stone slab, but not always. And there can be mobs spawning near you. With your glass, quickly build a protective box around you, leaving a 3x3 space to move around in. Light it up if needed. Leave a door way (blocked with dirt or other easy to remove material). I like to place a workbench with a lectern on top and a chest in this room. Place your Linking Book on the lectern and mark down your coordinates. Now you should be ready to scout the area! When you are ready to return to your home, click the Linking Book and click the picture on the right.

Some things to look for in an Age:
Ancient Library: Cobblestone structures about every 500 blocks. Full of bookcases and Mystcraft Pages! Always knock out the bookshelves to look in the corners for chest. And light up the top quick, mobs can spawn above the bookshelves.
Spontaneous Explosions: Sign of an unstable Age. You can still venture out. The explosions vary in size and damage. And an explosion close to your base can damage your linking book! Not a good idea to hang around.
Falling Meteors: Not just Chicken Little fantasy! These fall from the sky and cause damage. Will destroy the land and buildings they hit. Plus side is that you can mine them for Meteor Chips! Can damage you and your linking book! Also, the impact site can spawn Charged Creepers. Plus side is that you can mine them for Meteor Chips! Stick around if you would like to join the dinosaurs.
Shifting Earth: Another sign of an unstable Age. Looks like sand or gravel falling, but it's dirt, stone, or ores. Minecraft version of an earthquake. Eventually the entire Age will fall out the bottom. Pack up your stuff and move.
Decay: Bad stuff! Different types/colors of decay spread a different speeds. Will cause other negative effects and randomness. You can break it with a Diamond Pick. If it's showing up, it will eventually fill the whole Age. Adventurous people can still look around while it's spreading. I recommend ditching the Age and trying another.

Seems like a lot of bad with little gain? Not at all! Keep experimenting and you can make a wonderland to set up a dream home in. You can make huge oceans of lava to power your machines! And worlds to gather rare items from! Go forth adventurer and create the Age of your dreams!

You can also make a hang glider, which is 12 (I think) leather, and some sticks. It is very useful as you can travel over large distances without depleting much hunger. Also, who doesn't want to fly :)

Better yet is the Thaumostatic Harness, where you don't have to move around to be flying

Check the Thaumonomicon, you can't just craft them out of the blue

So, a tip for early food, before you can farm. Cut down some oak trees and get an apple. Just placing the apple in your crafting grid will give you an apple core, which you can right click on the ground as an apple sapling. When the tree grows, it will slowly ripen apples, dropping them when they are ready to eat. Combine this with a juicer (a piece of smooth stone above a stone pressure plate) to make stacks of apple juice with little time and no effort.

Vines also drop grapes which can be used in the juicer.

On a side note, combining an apple and an oak sapling in the crafting grid will give you the same thing.

Not quite the same thing. With an apple core, the apples drop when they are ripe. With a sapling, you have to pick them yourself. Just a matter of laziness really, which is a luxury in FTB.

Adding on to that, I see a lot more apples grow on my apple core trees than my sapling trees.

I have looked around on the web a bit, and I can't find them (also I have no clue what a thaumonomicon is)so if you could please maybe put up a link, that'd be great.
