First off, I would like to apologize that there isn't a sticked rules/guidelines for this section of the forum, as I have been advocating for this type of forum for a while. I am currently finishing up finals, so pretty much everything else is on the back burner, but I will try to get a simple post together with some of the other creative gurus soon.

I am liking what I am seeing here so far, so keep it up :)

Did you know string can be placed on the side of a block, even when it's way up in the air. break the block away and the string will remain floating in mid air, nice place to place a carpet or even a heavy block like an anvil. Place more string along the edge of the block graphic and you can make a complete floating platform this way. So many things can be placed on string and you do not need tripwire hooks, although is an added bonus if one does redstone with it.

String stacks as well.. you can keep stacking until getting to the height you want, and break all the string away except the top one.

Your character will pass through string and in some lighting and room coloring the string can be almost invisible.

    Did you know couches and chairs have a lot of design possibilities;

Too many more to show but those are a few examples. Even signs on the sides of a stair block make an acceptable replica of a chair/couch. Most common items in these builds is stairs blocks, slabs, and a random assortment for the back effect. Start with 2 stair blocks facing each other with a gap of a few blocks between. place slabs in the gap. Place any block in a row behind the stairs and slabs, now place the slabs on top of that row of blocks. That's it, a couch. endless possibilities.

I wanted to throw in a couple bed ideas for you to look at as well; keep in mind that vines do not grow in creative on imdeity.

I tried to keep the pic count down, sorry for how many there are in one post. As for the vines on the beds - that takes an extra step in creating.

    I will try not to confuse you so here goes;

Place blocks on top of the outer area of your bed or around the outside. Keep building up to make a wall around or on the bed and have a row on the top that overhangs the walls you made. Place vines on the outside of theses blocks going all the way around the bed,(except the overhang row, that is for the vine support at the top),. Now break away those extra blocks,( EXCEPT THE TOP ROW AND THE OVERHANG ROW). If you wanted to you could put blocks in place of the ones you just broke away, which I did on the second vine bed pic. I placed stairs around the outside of the bed on the floor, some blocks in the corners, and nether fence in the corners as well.. Again - endless possibilities.

Now you have vines that appear to be hanging/growing to act as a curtain for your beautiful bed. If I managed to explain it clear enough.

These are only some examples. I hope you gain something from this.

All of you may already know this, but by using torches and item frames, you can make a torch holder.

It is very simple. Place a item frame on a block. Then place any of the blocks shown in the item frames above in that item frame, I think you can use most of the blocks but I'm not 100% sure. When you have that done, hover over the block with the item frame on it but not the item frame itself and place the torch. If I explained that well enough, you should get something like the example above :)

I have used this technique for quite a while to make floating sand islands.
    floating islands.png
String is a bit more finicky to work with than Hallideadly makes it out to be. If you break the block below the string, the string will pop off. also, with sand and gravel, if you don't place the blocks directly on the string, they fall through it and break. My technique is to make a shape with dirt and place the string on the bottom of the dirt, then carefully take the dirt away, using the sides of the remaining dirt to place the sand or gravel.
Also, string can be used to prevent vines from growing in certain places, or to stunt the growth of reeds. (credit for the reeds trick from Dekendo)

Pressing S while holding F3 will reload all web-loaded client resources.
Pressing A while holding F3 will reload all chunks.
Pressing T while holding F3 will reload all textures, which is useful for texture pack authors.
Pressing H while holding F3 will toggle detailed item descriptions.

    • Shows tool and armor durability on damaged items
    • Shows up a map level
Pressing C while holding F3 for at least 6 seconds will trigger a manual debug crash on purpose after the keys are released.
Pressing B while holding F3 will toggle showing the hitbox around entities - good for Deity war

Squeezal - the idea is to not have string placed on top of a block. place it on the side and then break the block, string stays and you can add more to the edges of the floating string and build on top of them, etc... :)

Cathal - nice tip. works great, exactly how you described.

Did you know that sugar cane will stay in place after the nearby water source is removed.

You can not place sugar cane unless water is next to the block. There are a few options you have while water is still there.
First, you can let the sugar cane grow on it's own or place sugar cane on top of the first sugar cane and stack it up as high as you want.
Second, you can place other block types on top of the sugar cane or start growing more sugar cane as shown in the back row of the above pic.
Third, you can place other blocks next to the sugar cane starter block as shown in the lower right of the above pic and you can stack them up beside the cane as well.

So long as water is still next to the sugar cane starter block, you will be able to interact with and place blocks next to or on top of the sugar cane.

When the water is removed your options become very limited. You can still place blocks of any type next to the sugar cane starter block.

-If you place anything next to the sugar cane itself , the sugar cane will drop.
-If the sugar cane grew on it's own to 3/4 blocks high before you removed the water then you can still place more sugar cane on top of the grown cane without it dropping.
-If the sugar cane was 1,2 blocks high when you removed the water, then you can not stack more cane on top, it will drop.
-If you made stacks of blocks next to the stacked sugar cane before removing the water, the cane will stay, but as soon as you break any of the blocks next to the cane, the cane will drop.

Basically this means, you can interact with sugar cane all you want while the water is there.
You can not interact with sugar cane at all or break/place blocks next to cane when the water is gone, with one exception, (adding sugar cane to an already grown stack of 3 or more.)

Yes, I know, I was explaining why you shouldn't place string on top of blocks as well as alternate techniques. No use people getting up into the air and getting frustrated because they don't know all the ways string is hard to work with. Especially if they don't have fly!

Also, I see a lot of creative builds with tons of quartz. Try putting some snow blocks in. The blue in the snow blocks is really brought out by the whiteness of the quartz. It pops quite nicely :)

    Did you know;

Placing a picture frame on the side of a block, then putting a carpet or slab in that frame,(right click it twice to get it on the top), then placing a sign on the same side of that block, missing the picture frame and clicking on the remaining space on the block for the sign to go will make it look like a drawer and the slab or carpet looks like the handle to open the drawer.

Thanks to Haydoj - good tip. Looks pretty good.

there you go Maj. It might take some imagination to see this as a drawer.

This tip is for the real new players. (Left shift / crouch) if you are not able to fly this will be very useful.

When on top of a block, hold down left shift and walk as far as you can on the edge of that block. Now you are able to place a block on the side of the one you are currently standing on.

Very handy when you are up in the sky and are scared of falling off the block. holding shift means you will not fall off the block, just don't let go.. However, if you open your inventory screen while holding shift for crouch - the crouch will be canceled out, which means you could fall off, so be careful not to be on the very edge when opening inventory screen.

This method can be used to make a stairway to heaven - so to speak, lol. simply place a block on the ground, jump onto it. now jump straight up and place a block under you in mid jump. Now crouch and walk to the edge to place a block on the side.. Again , jump and place under you, and repeat this until you are as high as you want.. For the sneaky player, he/she will break away the lowest block each time before jumping and placing another under themselves. this effectively gets you into the sky with no more than 3 blocks showing at any given time.

I have used this method in PvP, (before reset) to hide my base 200 blocks in the sky, which never got found as there is no stairway or water fall to show a way into the base. A simple /sethome command and my base was pretty secure. *note - I made it above the water so all I had to do was jump off and land in water - no injury.

The crouch (holding left shift) is also used to place items on top of blocks that you cannot place things on normally - such as a torch on top of a furnace, or crafting table, and many, many others.

This can be used to cross a lava lake if needed as sneaking to the edge of a block next to lava will not burn you, and then you can place a block on the side of the one you are on which is the beginning of a bridge across lava. simply keep doing this until you reach the other side.

Just a few examples of how left shift can be used - I use it all the time in creative building for making many different things even though we can fly in creative.

If you have any requests on how something was made please ask. :) I have no pics of this stair building technique - but I can make some upon request.

this is true - however cuboid has just recently been implemented into the new creative structure. :)
