Don't be any closer than 3000 blocks to spawn, any base within a 3000 block radius of spawn is toast, they tend to be found very fast.

One of the most important things.. Dont invite people into your faction that you don't already trust. While it's possible that the stranger may turn out to be a great teammate, he may also betray you. He can steal your stuff and then give out your coordinates to other factions.

Try not to make your base visible. There's a plugin that makes Obsidian weak against explosives (I really despise this plugin...) so even if you have a nice completely covered obsidian base underwater, it's not completely safe. Just make it inaccessible and hidden.
EDIT: Just realized I had written "TNT weak against explosives"... lol

You sure about this? I've detonated tnt on obsidian and the obsidian was fine afterwards.

Yes you can explode tnt with obsidian however it takes 4 tnt explosions to break the obsidian.

Set up a main base on Faction claimed land. Also set up 2 or 3 hidden, secondary bases. Load them with enough supplies to start a new base. Also include some Armor and Weapons that can used to re-arm quickly during an assault on your main base. If possible set an alt you can TPA to or do /sethome in one of these. Then you can quickly teleport back and forth between bases.
Everything you put in these secondary bases will be easily stolen, since they are not on faction land. So hide them well, don't let any but your most trusted know about them, and be prepared to lose everything from them.
And a good defense is an Obsidian wrapped base, wrapped in Lava, wrapped in Stone, wrapped in water. If you can teleport in an out, do not put in any access tunnels. And remember to disable any portals when not in use.

How many people regularly get on PVP? im new and I like it a lot! but I cant seem to find anyone but abandoned bases..

What I do is put hidden supply chest around the map and keep track of them with a list of coordinates, so if I happen to die Ill always have something to start off with.

There are at least 20 regulars that i see often. If you logon during peak hours (evening time in america) then you'll see more people online. If you're on during off-peak hours then you may be the only person on.

    Hi all,

Firstly, PvP Wiki. That will hopefully be helpful. I'm constantly consulting it as well.

Secondly, be paranoid. Check who is online in the PvP world at any given time, either with /who or Tab. My faction and I have built a base above ground, clearly visible, on faction claimed land, not too far from spawn. Are we concerned about being raided...? Yes. Will we hide..? No.

'But Speh, you'll get raideded!!1' Always a possibility. The danger gives PvP its added thrill. We've had an attempted raid on our main base and it appears that the raiders were simply hungry.

Because we're not some hole in the ground, hidden away on a far corner of the map, it has driven us to plan strategically, build efficiently and with security constantly in mind. These are some of my tips.

    1) Be aware of the edge of your faction land. Enemies cannot build on it, but they can still build things next to it, I.E. TNT Cannons. I tend to keep an edge of empty space around our land to make it slightly more difficult for people to get over our walls.

    2) Never underestimate the value of doors, especially iron doors. Enemies cannot open doors. Every door is another layer of protection. Just make sure people close them behind themselves ;)

    3) Even a bucket of water/lava can be handy. It's fun to throw water/lava at enemies. If you can get higher than them, the possibilities are amusing.

It helps that our Max Power (The sum of all faction members' full power) is quite high and we tend to avoid dying (Thereby keeping our Max Power high). The higher your Max Power, the more faction land you can safely hold on to.

'But Speh, wat bout traytors?!!1' That is a concern as well, yes. However, as Btarb said, don't invite people you don't trust. Grow slowly, I say, on a solid foundation of trust and friendship. And if you are backstabbed, as MicklenTwist said, build a secondary or even tertiary base with backup supplies. You can always start again.

All in all, PvP is meant to be fun. Dont take it too personally, nothing is irreplaceable and if you're like me, roleplay a little bit ;)

    Many thanks,
    Seph

Once you've gotten a base, hoard everything. I mean everything. Don't throw stuff away, it becomes useful later.

Apologies for gravedigging, just thought a place to keep tips for setting up a base would be useful.

-Guard rooms with iron doors. You need to have stone buttons activate them. Enemies can use levers and pressure pads, and I'm sure they can just shoot a wooden button to activate it.

Along the way to find a base, gather supplies. So that way you don't have to stray to far from your new found base. And, if possible, have a second base incase your first base gets raided. I don't know how many times I've moved from faction to faction base due to being raided.
