My father taught me how to love poetry.
He studied under the poet laureate of his time
    and he
    (though it never benefited him)
    wrote poem after poem
all the days of his life.

    I remember Friday nights
all of twelve years old and
    sipping sweetened, steamed milk
    in a coffee shop
and rereading the selections of verse
we both had selected to perform.
    Some famous, some not so,
    some of our own work,
    and so nervous.
    Baring ones soul
to strangers and not strangers -
difficult at any age and all ages.
    And yet, it shot sweetness
straight into my heart and work and
    made the sharing of it
    a necessity.

    What is art unobserved, unread?

I wrote then, and have written
    peacemeal
All the days of my life.
So I would share the sharing
    with all of you
    in hopes that you, too,
    would gather sweetness,
would gain heart and hope and
    memory. love.
In the shared and in the sharing.

    -------~*~-------

If it isn't obvious yet, this is a post for sharing poetry. Original work is welcome with hugely open arms, and greatly encouraged! Please come and share! If you want to post your favourite poem written by someone else or quote it, please do, just make sure to credit the poet so we can all seek them out and enjoy them ourselves. Song lyrics are okay, too, but I suggest you go to the Song Lyric thread and share there, instead.

Some poems are very long, understandably, so they might need to fit in a couple posts ... Consider breaking it up into parts that you post every few days, or post it on a journal somewhere and link it here instead! I'll always follow a link to excellent poetry. Also, if you post a poem here and you want to edit it, please do. Poetry is a living thing, and if you, the poet, feel something needs changing, then you should change it!

We do have to follow forum rules here, and that includes language. Though I dislike censorship in art, if your piece contains explicit language or imagery, my suggestion would be either bleep out any expletives - like ****, put them under some kind of spoiler cut with a warning for graphic content/language (this might still go against forum rules, so be aware, please!), or you could post it off site somewhere and link us to the poem with a very clear explicit content warning above the link.

Note: I don't like judging on what is or isn't 'art', and as a graduate of a fancy, high-fallootin' art school, I have a great appreciation of art for art's sake and the use of explicit content in art. That being said, if a post contains only curse spam or is in any other way an obvious explicitous troll, I will ask for it to be removed. Be advised. Humor is welcome, limericks can be hilarious and fun. But lewd jokes are probably not going to fly, so just be aware.

    I hope you enjoy! I know I will. ^_^

    Yesterday I learned
    all which makes you you,
    from the eyes that smiled,
    to words kind and true
    is star dust, blown away.

Just dust, from something long ago.
    A thousand light years away
    A thousand earth years ago.
    You landed here, and there
    be no reason, just because.

    But I am dust too.
    And once, we were one.
    Same star, me and you,
    shined, since we begun.
    What I want is this:

    Let us reunite
    and our love to shine,
    like we shined before.
    Then in a thousand years
    we'll be one again
    and shine some more.

A poem which I got from a valentine.

    "Winter Whiteout"
    A peaceful poem by chblyth

    Dark,
    21,
    White,
    The forest glowing
A blue hue on the horizon
    A moon lit snow bank
    I tread on
    But should I
For this could be the place
    A place to live
    A place to die
    A place,
    In a winter whiteout

This is something I wrote a while back. I know it doesn't rhyme or flow but it's something. :p No need to tell me if it sucks, I already know.

    "..."

Save him, save him from himself, the pain, and the horrors within that are coming out to his life
Voices from his past friends that took their lives still run through his head
He know his sister is in pain and he can sense it but he can't do anything
He haven't seen his cousins in so long, why did they have to move so far away...

Constantly running and trying to hide but hiding only works for so long
So he keeps running and running but he ends up tripping himself
They catch up to him and laugh at him down on the ground
Then push him further down and he isn't able to pick himself up

He had a girl he loved so much and then she broke up with him with those cold words
He really finds it hard to talk to her to this day ever since that break up
And it seems she doesn't really need him sometimes so he doesn't bother
He can sense it, that she's going through her own problems and he try to help but fails

Ever since that day, he's lost a major touch to him but nobody probably notices
Because he's held the pain of seeing her not with him anymore
He screams her name outside on the top of his lungs hoping she can hear but she's somewhere far away
She was all he had and she found a way to break his heart, the one he trusted the most...

    Thanks chblyth :)

    Here's another one

    "Idk"

Live is evil if you turn your life backwards
People say they forget the past easily but I’m still embodied within it
My friends from the past have turned admittedly strangers
While my friends of the present still cause me dangerous hazards

I guess I’m as easy to forget like a password
But as easily to detain when a person needs something like I was ordered
Cowards think they can take advantage of me, as if my IQ was my shoe size
But I stoop down to their level and out dumb them all, giving them good advice

Will people ever learn even if you try to tell them right from wrong?
I guess not, because in this world ignorance sometimes over powers the knowledge
And knowledge is confronted with trying to be strong and belong within the world we live in
But we're too busy worrying about nonsense when the last thing we need is more problems

I have to say things in another state just for a person to understand sometimes
Misunderstood, unrecognized, just a guy with a hint of different pride
Thinking about the difference of when a person cries or dies
It both hurts…But at the end of day just know if you cry you can still stand…

That poem absolutely does NOT suck, Kiddie! It's awesome, and so is your second one! I really like them. And poems don't have to rhyme. They can be good when they do, but it's not a requirement - personally, I almost never rhyme, although I play with form a lot. :D

    "Broken"

    Feet blackened, by dirty ash,
My feet, burned. But I have not wronged,
I still be punished, to keep me at rest,
These pictures of rebellion in my head,
Stir, and stir, day to day to day,
    Lashes i take,
    But, i have finally snapped...
    A knife gleaming,
    Riddled with blood,
    Clattered on the floor,
I have snapped, and i am broken,
Twisted, mangled into a mear variation of my self,
    I have not done wrong,
    I have been told,
By the demons in my mind,
    For my sanity,
    Is broken...
    Forever to be broken.

(This poem is about a darkish, but hope-filled thought. Enjoy)

    "Fire"

    Fire.
    Beauty never had been matched,
    By it's destruction,
    Touch it and you gasp,
    The pain is apparent,
    But if you feel fire,
    You will let go,
    Your cool skin,
    It dry and throbbing,
    Begging for safety,
    But you let give,
    Push forward through the fire,
and rest your hand upon it's unforgiving tongue,
It grasps your wrist and takes you along,
    You burn brighter, and brighter,
The light and heat engulf you,
    And the light drains...
You stop, turn, and gasp in awe.
    Fire has been bested...
By the place it brings you to.

Of course you can! Poetry is a living thing. Especially if you write something on the fly for this post specifically, you should totally edit it - some will read it over again, others will read it for the first time, so if you see something you want to change, then you should definitely make the edit. I'll make that clear in my first post!

    A Civilization Uncivilized

    I read or heard somewhere
    that the usual unremarkable "they"
    found proof of a civilization
    in South America
    that thrived on peace.
In ruins they could find no trace of
war or battle, weapon or bloodshed.

They tried so hard to discover a mark of
    bestiality
    in these ancient peoples,
    that a child buried lovingly
in the floor of a house
was suspected of being ritual sacrifice.

With no foundations found in the foundation,
    the speculation was finally reversed.
We seem to seek the violent
    as easy explanation
because we do not know a life
    without it.

A place where trade and commerce
replaced the point of a blade.
    How could our ancient ancestors
    Discover the secret of peace?
    A secret that
    in this 'civilized' era
we cannot seem to find or apply?

    The people we have become
seem strangely drawn to create conflict
    instead of contact
    threats
instead of a trade of ideas.
    Mother thinks
    it was a Matriarchy.

Ours is an age of backwards civility.
    Shoot first
    and never ask questions.
    Possessions
    override the need for peace.
I want what I want when I want it.

But not just what we want
    or even what we have
    informs our unrest.
    It is what we fear.
    bestial
    It is that ancient instinct.

Fear drives the need for violence.
Fear is the basest human emotion.
Fear of loss, fear of betrayal,
    fear of the star-dark night,
    fear of the true unknown,
    that which we do not
    understand
    we fear.

    And that which we fear,
    we seek to destroy
    without question or consideration.

    beast

    Did these ancient ancestors
    who lived with the world
    in peace
    discover a weapon
    a secret
in the war against our truest natural enemy,
    fear?

    Perhaps they left it
    locked it buried it away
    somewhere in the ruins
    that mark their passage
    through our material world.

    Perhaps it lies under some
    unturned stone,
and we have yet to discover it
    because we have yet
    to seek it.

If so, then it would be best
    to turn guns into shovels,
    to trade airplanes for dust brushes;
    swap maps of enemy territory
    for maps of archaeological sites.

    Instead of destroying the earth
    out of fear,
    we dig up earth
    to discover fear's defeat,
    and cover ourselves
    in the clay of peace.

I am not good at English poems, my words are better in German and my rhymes definately are. Though, I want to share one, maybe some, of my English poems:

    He changed
From the beginning of my time
we shared the sweet and taste of lime
he was there right by my side
his arms where strong and always wide
my head and heart believed his voice
believing him- my ever first choice.

I could tell him now for short
    in union with a cord
„We had one world and not two
and I never lied to you!“
I hoped to keep you just that way
    for ever and a day.

    But noone had no grace
    he really turned his face
    the only way to stay
was to try a different way
    I turned my mind
for his life I turned blind.

With the time we come along
I do not think I made it wrong
he changed that’s what I had to see
nothing went wrong, especially not with me
we phone every week a few days
now it is different but we go our ways.

That was lovely and melancholy, Gwen, thank you. And feel free to share in English as well as German, if you like. I cannot speak or read more than a bit of Spanish and French, but I think even just getting a gist of a poem in another language is lovely ... But even just sharing your English poems would be wonderful. ^_^

Thanks Moira. :) My German poems are several, I write, used to write a lot. Two of them were even chosen for the National Anthology of German Poems. One this year, one in 1996 or 97. I am pretty proud of that. And actually sharing poems is for me like singing. Feeling like standing naked in front of the audience/readers and it can be so embarrassing. So I am proud of anyone that posts here, for sure. If a poem comes from the heart it is the best we can offer other people. Unfortuately there are a lot of people who are not liking poems anymore. But guess what: I think you inspired me here, to do some more. If I post a poem in German later on, perhaps, I will be sure to give a short summary. I think translation is for rhymed poems not fitting. ;)

One more in English, very old (wrote it almost 15 years ago), but still up to date I guess:
    Miss and kiss
    Missing you in my arms
Missing you and all your charms
knowing that the world stood still
before I got my lasting will:
You, my love, my heart, my pain,
my summer, winter, sun and rain.

You are all I want to take
You are the one whose heart shall break
because of me and not some other
    visible, not under cover.
    Kissing you my heart desires
Kissing you lights up my fires.
