if /cprivate was open to everyone, like in other servers, you could make a furnace/chest house and lock all of the walls

But then there would be no need for towns.

people should join towns to be part of a community, not as a means for chest protection.

I agree with chest protection anywhere. that would save mods alot of work. perhaps a system to allow just 1 locked chest per person ( in the wild )

Ah yes, the ol' "they should because.." dream. Reality and 'should' are two different things however. Some people join for the community. Some for the protections towns offer.

Even if someone were to live in the wild, they can still get a town plot in a nearby town and store their chests there (and get full protection of their chests).

This is basically just asking for more database load from the increased use of LWC and random locked chests all over the place that then have to be manually unlocked by mods and staff. It will likely create more work for mods than it eliminates.

I can only compare to other servers i have been on, and so far i have seen little evidence that right clicking a chest, firing an event that does a single Select on a table, is causing that much of a strain on a database. As for added workload due to mods having to unlock chests, is highly exagurated... Not more than any regular theft.

Added protection/restrictions would even reduce the interventions needed:
    * Locking chests can be restricted to X amount per Y time frame (only valid in the wild as on plots a different mechanism covers protection [At least i assume this still to be the case])
    * Chests belonging to Banned players, can be unlocked remotely (LWC admin purge command)
    * The LWC database can be queried for anomalies, like average distance between chests being higher than a certain distance

Allowing LWC would also ensure that the towns population count reflects real people participating for building, not for pure storage.

    I see only benifits.

S.E. has this system and they have an entire forum and a number of staff that handle just these 'unlock a random chest in wilderness' requests. There would definitely be additional workload for staff.

Also you assume that only banned players would be leaving chests locked when in reality, there will be numerous newbies that settle in the wilderness for a day or 2, lock their chest, then leave the server or move into a town and leave their chest in place (locked). Considering we're getting 2000+ users every 24 hours, that is a lot of time wasted just unlocking chests.

The biggest reason for not having this is the fact that we're a town-focused server. Towns offer full protection of structures and automatically lock chests plus the majority of players who stay on the server end up joining a town.

Whats the point of allowing chests to be locked in the wilderness if it encourages people to build out there and get griefed (structure) constantly which again we'd have to check out and rollback. Plus people who really want LWC for some random reason can donate which not only gives them LWC but gives them protected regions outside of towns via precious stones.

Ultimately, allowing LWC locking for all players would be a waste of staff time, waste of resources and serves no purpose when towns offer chest locking that plus a lot more.

Well i did my best to persuade ppl. and failed. I guess i will always hate the town system, nothing that can ever change that. Anyhow, i will be retiring from Minecraft for awhile next week, SWTOR is getting released and i expect to be playing that 24/7.

if a player has made a house near a town but hasn't joined a town and still gets grief, would the stuff get rolledback or would they do nothing about it?

what's the problem with joining a town? you get helpful people who are there alot. i have gotten alot of items and advice from my buddies in the town and i have also given alot of items and advice in return. let it be said that i have never griefed. building in a town allows you the freedom to build as high and far as you want without the worries of griefing. you can go away and not have to worry about things being stolen or destroyed by ******bags. the griefers are idiots but you were the one who built in an unprotected area knowing full well the dangers. sure there is often a charge to gain new plots in towns but guess what, that new plot has to originally come out of the town funds. just ask around in /recruit and if noone answers try again. just dont spam.
